Need info on Disney Club

Can anyone gove me info on the benefits of joining the Disney Club? We are making our first trip and have heard you can use it to join the EC with National cars. Is it worth joining just for this and do you save much on rentals? What else can you save on? We prob won't go into any of the parks this trip and may try to take the cruise next year.
