Need hotel on I-95 Empora, VA or Roanoke, NC

I am requesting a hotel recommendation for a one night stay on a Thurs. pm end of July for perhaps either Roanoke, NC or Empora, VA vicinity for end of July. (Our final destination is Hilton Head, SC).

We hope to leave our house in NJ on a Thursday by 8pm after work. We will have two kids traveling with us. We were considering driving straight thru, but rethinking this as neither of us has ever done an all night drive before (and we both have to work the day we leave). Perhaps better to get past Washington, DC and Richmond, VA then stop for the night, sleep and get an early start in the am. This area seems to be 5 1/2 - 6 hours into our trip and I think gets us past the traffic congested areas, correct?

Not looking for anything fancy - clean with no extra nonpaying guests (bedbugs, rodents, cockroaches, etc). We just a place to shower and sleep a few hours.

Check out Trip Adivsor to get an idea of hotels in those areas. We usually try to stay at a hotel run by Marriott (Fairfield Inns) or Hilton (Hampton Inns) to get points..We also stay at Holiday Inns & Quality /Comfort Inns.
