We are relatively new to DVC and I am a bit confused. Could one of my fellow DISers help me out? Here's the scenario...

My boyfriend and I have a trip to SSR planned in October. It will use up 64 points. After that, we will have six points that need to be used by May 31st. Originally I thought it was January. Our use year begins in June.

My boyfriend just found out that he needs to have surgery immediately after our October trip. As a result, it will use up the rest of his time off until July 1st of 2009. He refuses to go back to Florida in the summer because of the heat so we won't be able to go again until October.

Now, here is where it gets tricky and I am completely overwhelmed.

I do not want to lose those six points and cannot bank them (they are from a banked amount already). I thought tonight of an idea. I am going to call and see if I can get a studio at the Boardwalk or another DVC resort worth more points. That will use the six up. If I need to go a few over, that is okay because I have 160 points that I need to either use or bank by January 31st. Does this sound like a plan? What resort should I try?

If I cannot get a studio somewhere else at such a short notice, would it be feasible to try for a room at the Grand Flo or Poly or somewhere else? How expensive, pointwise, are these? Would this be a good option so I don't lose those few points?

If I bank 2008's points, does that mean they need to be used by January 31st of 2010?

Thank you for all of your help. I appreciate it SO much!

You'd be better off losing the 6 points rather than using your points to book at a regular non-DVC WDW resort. The point structures for non-dVC are very high, and there is a $95 fee to book outside the DVC system.

Some DVC resorts are higher, oothers less than SSR per night. If there is no studio availability for your dates at another resort (it is Food & Wine) maybe you could upgrade to a one bedroom unit for one night at the beginning of your trip. I know it is a hassle to move, but you wouldn't lose the points that way.

I would try another resort and borrow a few points if needed or just lose the 6 extra points.

My other suggestion is to get a new boyfriend.

why not just add a day to your ssr trip, borrow the few extra points you need? :confused3

I always enjoy an excuse to add a day to my trip :woohoo:

I'd absolutely LOVE to add more days and that would be the simple solution, but I am a teacher and have limited time off during the school year. Adding another day is just not an option.

I think Chuck had a good idea - if there isn't a studio availble elswhere for your dates, upgrade to a 1 bedroom. You may have to borrow, but you will be totally spolied with the king bed, jacuzzi tub, washer/dryer in the unit and a full kitchen.

If you aren't going to add more days, but are just trying to burn 6 points, I'm ot sure I understand why you would do that. If your number of days stays the same, you are better off losing (not loosing) the 6 points than to spend a whole lot extra plus another $95 to get one of the none DVC resorts for a night.

Think of it this way...those points probably cost you about $8 each, tops. (Cost of DVC broken down per year and per point, plus the maintenanc fee). If you lose 6 points that's like losing $48. That's not that much. If you use them to book a non-DVC resort you'll be out $95 plus the additional points that you would need to use.

Personally I'd just let those 6 points go. Things like that happen from time to time, unfortunately.

Boyfriend needs to suck it up! We always go in the summer :rotfl:

UPDATE: No studios are available so I am screwed with that option. -sigh- I looked into a weekend get away somewhere local and those use a lot of points plus the fee. Grr. I guess now I should look into a one bedroom. I'm debating on whether or not I should just get a one bedroom for the whole time or one night. This is the pits.

UPDATE AGAIN: Just decided to get a one bedroom at OKW or SSR. Neither are available for our dates. This is really ridiculous. I'm annoyed by the fact that they allow non-members to book our rooms and then we get pushed out of using them. Anyone else?

Can the points be transferred? Perhaps you can find someone who wants 6 points transferred?

I really do not know anything about this. This is so upsetting to lose those points. Is this common? Did it ever happen to any of you?

Sure, we've lot a couple of points before. Only 4, but we still lost them. I valued them at $7 (based on our cost plus maintenance fees) so we really only lost $28...not much when you think about it. It happens sometimes.

BWV has the cheaper rooms as does AKV..they have value rooms that are less points

I still say take a teacher sick day :teacher: or I agree with the other poster, tell the boyfriend to suck it up, use a scooter or something , plenty of those available at disney :moped:
