I am trying to put together my Cheshire Cat Halloween costume. I bought a purple sweater dress and the pink ribbon to attach to it to make the stripes. I want to try and actually wear the dress again, any suggestions on the best way to attach the ribbon? I've thought about double stick tape, but I am not sure if that will be strong enough.

If you have a sewing machine, I would use a basting stitch. Just be careful when you remove the stitches after Halloween. Most glue-based products are going to leave a residue.

Another poissibility might be to try putting spray adhesive on the ribbon, but I would test this on something before risking the dress.

Small safety pins? (Not sure what kind of fabric it is and if it would damage it). If you pin from the inside it would hide them and possibly minimize any holes/damage.

With a needle and thread, of course.

Baste the ribbon on with matching thread, then when Halloween is over, clip the threads from the inside of the garment and remove the ribbon. Do it by hand; using a sewing machine will leave stitch tracks.

Toupee tape.

I use it on clothing all the time. Holds really well and doesn't leave a residue.

I use it to hold closed gaps in blouses, to temporarily hold a hem that's fallen until I can fix it, to temporarily hold patches (ie-like Girl Scout patches) till they can be sewn on.

I am afraid that since it is a sweater dress using any pins or attaching it with a needle and thread will end up ruining the dress. I tried one pin on it and the fabric now it stretched out there and there is a little hole.

I wasn't sure if anyone knew of a heavier removeable fabric adesive

Thanks! Where might one find Toupee tape?

I would just use a baste stitch and do it by hand, baste stitches are larger and as a PP mentioned using a machine will leave track marks but doing it by hand will not. I am doing something similar but with a tulle skirt instead of a sweater dress. I am making a Blue Fairy (from OUAT) costume and have attached lights under the tulle and will be attaching ribbons tonight for the "tentacle" look. LOL I'm just going to hand stitch with a baste stitch so I can take them off after because I want to use the same skirt on Monday for a saloon girl costume.

I would just hand sew them on (with bigger stitches) using pink thread to match the ribbon. Once you are finished with the costume, carefully pick the stitches out with a seam ripper and your fingernail.

If you use double stick tape it will leave a residue from the adhesive, so that's probably a poor option.

I was watching a youtube video on applique yesterday and they used a water soluble adhesive to adhere the fabric. It was in a spray can. Maybe check some local quilting shops to see if they have something like that?

I would hand sew it on as well.

The pin damaging the fabric comes as no surprise to me, I've been sewing a LONG time and pin quality has declined greatly, both safety pins and dressmaker pins. Sometimes there's barely a point!

Don't get me started on how crappy fleece is these days.

AND sewing machines. :headache::headache::headache:

Back to the topic at hand, hand sewing needles (a nice THIN one) should not damage your fabric at all. Good luck!
