I recently signed up to run the half marathon in Disneyworld's Marathon Weekend 2010. Ive been running since the beginning of January. Just beginning training via runnersworld.com.....run 4 min walk 1 min that type a thing.
A few days ago I noticed my left knee was sore. Not at all painful...but "weird". Now its a constant sore...I made an appt for next Thurs...the earliest they can get me in at the ortho...but oh my god. This was such a big goal of mine to run this half. What do I do now as far as my training? What if its something serious and I cant even run the race??!? :sad2:

the pain is, you could have ITBS (IT Band Syndrome) http://www.anaerobic.net/runnersguide.html

Chondromalacia http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/patelladisorders/a/chondromalacia.htm

or some tearing of the menisci, or ACL, MCL or LCL. http://www.aclsolutions.com/anatomy.php

I don't know if you have been running through the pain, but I'd try RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).

A good rule of thumb that I've heard here is to rest it for two or three days, and try again...if the pain comes back, then get thee to a doctor!

Knee pain stinks...I'm just recovering from my third knee surgery...

Hope all goes well for you!

Mike

Thanks Mike! The pain is a constant soreness that feels like the top of my knee. I cant press around and find one key point of the pain. It just feels like all over the top of my knee consistent sore. Not bad either. Just annoying..."weird". I never felt one instant of sharp pain either followed by soreness. It was just sore on my Monday run and never stopped...:sad2:

If you didn't have any sudden pain, then your ACL, MCL, LCL are likely intact.

I'm NOT an expert, but you might have called it with Chondromalacia/runner's knee.

I'd still try 3 days of RICE between now and your doctors appointment...you will have four days to see if it comes back, and if it does you are all set up.

Ice is always good...heat can sometimes hurt if its applied to early...learn to love RICE.

Rest, Ice Compression, Elevation.

There's lots of smart people on the boards (and I'm not including myself among them, I just have had enough injuries to research some of them)...maybe one of them will chime in with some other thoughts...

Hey! That sounds like me last January. I just started running and then I had knee problems. Here's what worked for me:

- Getting fitted for running shoes at a running store. I thought I could just run in whatever sneakers I had in my closet. And... make sure you change those shoes every 300-500 miles (I'm a stomper so I change mine every 250)
- Icing after a run
- ART which got rid of the pain
- Regular core training because your abs support your entire body - who knew? Not me :)
- Massages! But do you really need a reason for that?

I hope you feel better soon! Knee pain is no fun. Keep us posted!

Add me to the list of people who have had knee pain...

Last November, I started experiencing pain on my long runs. I would be fine for the first 10-12 miles, then the pain would get so bad that I couldn't run through it and sometimes it was even hard to walk through it. I also had a lot of pain in my knee when going up and down the stairs.

I went to my dr, who recommended physical therapy. By the time I got my first PT appt, it was exactly 1 month before the WDW marathon (which was my first marathon) :scared1: . I was so scared that I wasn't going to be able to run the race. My PT used to run marathons, so she really knew her stuff. She examined me and found that my left IT band was weak, so that was causing my knee pain. She gave me a bunch of exercises to do twice a day and she also told me to buy a foam roller. I did my exercises faithfully and also saw her once a week until the marathon. I couldn't believe it when I crossed the finish line on marathon day - I did not have one bit of knee pain for the entire 26.2 miles!:cool1:

Don't worry right now. Go to the dr and see what they say. You have so much time before the race. Good luck! :goodvibes
