We bought a house in Nov. and the owners before us had cats and a dog and let neighborhood cats wander into the house. Now we do not have pets nor do we want neighborhood animals wandering into our house and we finally got rid of the cat smell that was lingering in the house. When we come home, a black cat darts to our door and tries to come in. What can we do, if anything, to deter the cat from wanting to come into our house?

You could try spraying some animal repellent around the door and yard. The cat will get the idea eventually.

you can buy some cat deterrent spray at a pet shop, that might work. also, since you're not feeding it (hopefully?) It will probably stop coming around soon (assuming the last people were feeding it). Don't leave any food out for it to eat or it will keep coming back. Also if you keep a water spray bottle at the front door (if it won't freeze up) you can spray the cat when it comes near, cats HATE that, and it will most likely run away. Hope these suggestions help.

tricia.

Thank you for the suggestions, I didn't know a repellent existed. Also, we are not feeding the cats, we have never left any food so I guess the cat is just used to being fed:confused:?

You could also try getting a humane live-trap then taking it to a no-kill shelter so (s)he can find a home.
