This is a tough one.

It's for my MIL. She's turning 67. She does not like to go out to eat, is a bit of a recluse, only goes to work and family functions, hates movie theaters, does not like getting gift cards, really has all the clothing she needs, says she doesn't want anymore sit-arounds or decorations for her house, does not read (I mean, she's not illiterate, but never reads for pleasure), she's very set in her ways, has a dvd player (that we got her), but never uses it, does not listen to music.

What she likes: She gardens, but I think she pretty much has everything needed for one and there's no room, that I can see, for any new plants. She watches tv a lot (likes HGTV, Andy Griffith, some other comedies). She is very family oriented (her brothers, sisters, and cousins - not so much with her kids, and only one grandchild). She likes to bake, but has cake plates, cake carriers, brownie pans, etc. We always get her nightgowns and robes, so she has a plethora of them.

And to make it worse, I procrastinated (well, dh did - he asked me this morning to get something) and today is her birthday.

Help!

What about some books on tape, or her favorite TV shows on DVD? Or a house cleaning service for a month or two. Or you could take her for an afternoon at a tea room and then pedicures.

I doubt she'd listen to books on tape, but if it's the right one, she just might. I'll keep that in mind. We've done the tv shows on dvd, but I don't think she's ever watched them. House cleaning? It's a possibility, but she's a bit paranoid - not sure she'd like it. I definitely know she wouldn't want an afternoon tea or pedicure. And I certainly would not want to take her! I can't imagine. This woman is the least relaxed and relaxing woman I've ever known.

Thank you for the ideas. I think the books on tape would be my best bet. I'll have to see what's out there that she may listen to.

She likes to bake and garden?

Williams Sonoma... get her some fancy baking stuff.

I have all of the gardening crap, too, but nobody ever really buys themselves the EXPENSIVE stuff! If someone got me a nice, heavy duty set of gardening tools, I would love it! :thumbsup2

Ok, I'll take a look at their website and see if anything pops out at me. We do have one in a nearby mall, so that's a possibility. Thanks!

Then how about something to help her enjoy her garden, like a glider adirondack chair, or some sort of portable canopy so she can sit in the shade?

Does she have one of those little gardening carts that you can sit on instead of kneeling to garden?

She doesn't really sit outdoors much (and I don't think she'd want to), but possibly an outdoor canopy or free standing umbrella, since she does have a outdoor dining set.

What about a digital picture frame? You could put the pictures onto it for her and then she can just plug it in. You could also periodically update pictures as well.

They have really come down in price and are available at a lot of places.
