Need help - What would you do to this kitchen

I highly recommend Traffic Master Allure vinyl tile
It comes in a variety of finishes, including granite and wood. It is a snap together, waterproof, floating floor system that requires NO floor prep, you just lay it down on top of your existing floor, and it is extremely easy to lay. We've used it several times and love it. You could do your entire kitchen in a few hours.

I would probably start with new flooring and paint then go from there. Good luck!

It has white cabinets, tan walls, dark green counter and a butcherblock top on the island, and a wood floor. It looks nice.

I couldnt find the better pictures.... and my kitchen is too messy right now to take a picture! These cabinets have been many colors. I get "kitchen Bored" pretty easy and re-do it once every two years or so. I like the red a lot and have kept it for a while and am not tired of it yet. I have changed the window sill and some other trim to gloss black. Love it.

I'm not sure how I feel about the butcherblock top on the island. That really helps me visualize it, though.

We have a house in our neighborhood that had a hard time selling. One of the reasons was the pergo/laminate. In this neighborhood people expect hardwood or travertine type tile. I would be careful with checking into that before putting laminate in. I like some of it, but some of it looks like plastic to me.

Hmm...ok. So, now I'm thinking possibly yellow for the walls, which would go well enough with the tile behind the sink (also dark green) and the counter tops (which, while ugly and fairly cheap, are in good shape). I think we could swing a new floor in the kitchen, too. I like the idea of wood. The family room is very bright with two big windows and a glass paned double door leading out to the patio, so that brightens up the kitchen.

Dawn, you'd definitely do wood in the kitchen rather than pergo or a nice laminate? I don't think I'd want ceramic tile, but granite is a possibility.

Last time I was in Home Depot I looked at the laminate flooring. All of it that I looked at looked cheap to me, but I'm sure there's some that looks better.

You need to go to a higher end flooring store.

I would paint the room a soft gold or yellow. I also really like the idea of extending the island for a seating area. Our former home had a similar island and we loved having that seating area.

That home also had granite tile. If you choose the correct grout, it will be hard to distinguish it from a slab. In our case it was more costly to install than ceramic tile, but significantly less than slab granite. The only issue I had was when I wanted to roll out cookie dough. You could do solid on your island and tile everywhere else as someone mentioned if that's an issue.

I also like the idea of the beaded board paneling on the island. I wouldn't use it anywhere else, though. I personally like the look of a tumbled marble or similar style ceramic backsplash with the granite counters. Even a mosaic tile (ceramic or glass) would look nice. Some of them come in a large square with a net back to make it easier to install yourself.

Armstrong mads a VERY realistic tile looking vinyl flooring. A friend has it in her kitchen and until I got down and touched it I though it was real tile. You could have that installed for probably $500 with that floor size. You could get new laminate countertops for under $1000. There are many very nice granite looking laminates on the market. I also agree with everyone else, extend the island out for seating. I would see if you could extend the island on 3 sides too so you could have seating for at least 4 vs just the back side for seating for 2-one on each side, 2 on the back. It would also give you are large work space on the island.

I need an 8" laminate countertop in my laundry room, it is $35 at home depot-not installed since we can do that ourselves in that application.

Yes... I agree with the poster who said higher end flooring store. We have Pergo in our kitchen but it cost as much as hardwood would have cost. Not home Depot stuff. We have dogs, and did not want real wood to deal with. The Pergo is wonderful. My dad has the cheap stuff and its pretty cruddy.

If you didn't want to go with a cheap look laminate or expensive wood floor you could look into an engineered hardwood floor.

TeresaNJ, I showed dh your kitchen, he won't go for the red but he said I could do whatever else I wanted. I found a green kitchen online that I love so he gave me the go ahead

LOL sure... my DBF can reach the tall ones, I can get the ones in the middle, but my belly is stopping me from stooping too low!!

I've try to have a red 'accent' around there... with dish towels and a rug, but thats as far as I got.... I think red is beautiful in a hom(thats why I suggested the red walls to OP originally), but whats cool is... DBF said "Ok, we can do that" when I showed him your picture

I'm going to have to get around to taking pics of what we have remodeled or redone so far and uploading them to shutterfly or something... I"m such an HGTV type addict!!!
