I bought Dutch Boy 1 coat paint, rollers, edger, etc. Well I put some paint on the roller and started and I'm getting white flecks in the paint, I can't get it 100% covered. You can see "sponge" shapes all over... urgh! Am I doing something wrong? The walls are sealed, so I don't know what to do.

What type of wall surface?

What color is the wall now?

What color are you painting it?

What are the flecks from..... the roller, the paint, of the wall surface??

Are you using a new roller pan and is it free from residue? What type of roller are you using and is it for the type of wall you're painting (ie, is it for painting over rough or smooth surfaces?)

Sorry for so many questions when you're looking for answers ;)

Sounds like maybe the rollers are no good? Either that or the paint wasn't shaken or mixed well.

Sealed with what?

Is the surface you're trying to paint smooth and shiny?

Guess more info would have helped. They are painted wood. Current color is tan. I'm painting Fluer De Lis over it, dark red/brown.... it's almost like I'm getting sponge impressions all over it, hard to describe. Almost like as soon as I roll it on, when I go back on the other stroke it comes right back off.
The white flecks, I meant to say white spots....

How heavy do you have to apply paint, the rollers are brand new, should I go buy more?!?!

You have to apply several coats, but you have to let them dry in between coats.
Make sure your paint is well shaken, your roller and tray are clean. You'll get sponge marks on the first coat..it's not going to cover completely. Let it dry a couple of hours then apply another coat. Some colors need a third as well...
It takes patience LOL
Good Luck, let us know how it comes out!

I should have said make sure the coats are completly dry to the touch before applying another coat or it will have little crack marks, you may even want to do a coat today and let it dry overnight. Thin coats are better than thick.

One thing I can tell you is ever since they stopped using lead in paint, one coat coverage works about as well as those pills that are supposed to make you go from a size 24 to a size 6 while you sleep ;) I am remodeling our house and we have yet to see any paint cover in one coat unless you are painting the same color over the existing color.

That being said - anything with red in it is impossible to get one coat coverage with. Red is a very saturated color. You probably should have used a tinted primer with it (tinted close to the final color) Otherwise you will more than likely be doing 2-3 coats at least to get a good consistant coverage with no light areas showing through.

Darlene,

It sounds like you are using a Latex paint over an Oil based paint!
This is what will cause the new paint to not adhere.

You will need to use a primer over the old paint before you can proceed with the new color paint. Behr Paint (sold at the Home Depot) has a great primer in a purple can that will allow you to paint over the oil based paint and then complete the job with the new latex based color.

Good Luck!

Does it matter how you use the roller, up or down, both, sideways, etc. I guess I will take Dutch Boy up on the 1 coat or money back or replacement....

If it's sealed wood you may need to rough up the surface with sandpaper before paint will adhere to it. I know you have to do that with painting cabinets anyway.

It could be that the paint isn't mixed very well and that these white things are just part of the original paint before the tint was properly mixed. If you can, take it back to the store and tell them to shake it up again.

If the white spots are just the wall showing through again, then I agree with the latex over oil theory. Just get a primer to solve this problem and then use your paint again.

You can tell if your original paint is oil by rubbing it with denatured alcohol. If it comes off on the rag, its latex. If it stays solid and doesn't come off, its oil.

it took us FOUR coats of "one coat" paint to paint our red room red.

:)

Called Dutch Boy, they said that even though the can says I do not need a primer, they recommend it... so I didn't void the gaurentee and they will send sending me my money back because I did follow the instructions on the can. They told me to use grey primer first and then 1-2 coats of the color. We shall see...lol!

Ask if you can get the primer tinted red. We just painted my husband's office a dark brick red, and even with the red-tinted primer it still took us 3 coats of paint to get it perfect. It seemed like the parts where we used the brush (around the ceiling, windows, baseboards & corners) it never seemed to cover as well. We used fairly expensive paint too (Benjamin Moore). It definitely helps to have the dark primer because red is the hardest color of all to get right.

Good luck!

I have NEVER gotten one coat coverage from one coat coverage paint. With one coat paint it has ranged from 2 coats to 5 to cover the surface.

I am painting too! I found out I su** at painting. I just put the primer on today and tomorrow will be the color. I am looking at the job I did with the primer and I sure hope I can do a better job with the green paint.

Is appyling paint in the W shape the best way to put it on the walls?

Make sure you're using the correct roller too. There are different types of rollers for different surfaces.
