The first leg (HNL to LAX) of our flight just got cancelled so now my TA is looking at booking us on a flight that would get us in 1 hour before our next leg (LAX to MCO). We would be landing at gate 1 and would have to get to gate 4, seeing that we wouldn't have much time, are those gates really far? Oh, the airlines are Hawaiian at gate 1 and American at gate 4.

Our other choices are pay an extra $600 more for a flight that would fly us into LAX 2 or more hours before our next leg (not my pick to pay this much more)

or

Fly into LAX the night before, spend the night at Embassy Suites ($100-$129) then cab back to the airport early in the morning to get on flight to Orlando?

Are you sure they are in the same terminal? According to this website, Hawaiian is in terminal 2, American is in terminal 4.

Those gate numbers don't seem to match up:

I've flown into LAX terminal 1, it's not very big (the terminal itself), but I don't know about switching terminals.

I think the TA might have meant terminal.

At this point, I think we're just going to fly in early and do an overnight at Embassy Suites. :(

Amyg: I think you made the right choice about coming the night before. I have never had to make the transfer, but as you can tell from the map DebbieB linked, they are about as far from each other as they can possibly be. You will definitely have to go outside and either walk or take the internal airport shuttle and then go through security again at Terminal 4. 1 hour is probably not enough time.

Also, I have had good luck booking LAX hotels through priceline. I recommend going to biddingfortravel to get an idea what to expect, but you will probably be able to save yourself some $$$ and still get a nice hotel. Also, most hotels at LAX do have shuttle buses that run almost 24 hours a day, so you may not need to cab it.

Good luck in your decision. -- Suzanne

Why should you have to pay more for an alternate flight if the airline cancelled yours? (Assuming it is the same airline the replacement flight is being booked on.) Have your travel agent talk to the airline about this.

Also, if the over water portion of the trip is a completely separate booking from the over land portion of the trip (or for any "connecting" itinerary using separate bookings or int he old days, separate ticket books) you should have several hours or even an overnight at the "connection point" in which case the overnight in Los Angeles is a good idea. Missing a "connection" with separate bookings for each leg is a no-show, not a missed connection.
