Leaving for the March 16th, dh has a question. Can you put cash down for ship charges or do you have to leave a credit card? If a credit card is left, can you pay off the charges in cash?

Thanks!:smooth:

You can leave cash or a credit card.

Once you reach about $400 in credit card charges, DCL will charge your card. I'd rather have one $1000 'charge' against my card at the end of the cruise instead of 3 separate charges ($400/$400/$200). I'm sure DCL does this so that they can block cruisers from charging when they have exceeded their credit limit.

Have a great trip!

You can leave cash and keep checking the balance at Guest Services often, or you can leave a credit card and cover it with cash before the $400 limit is reached. Both require keeping close watch over your account.

Having a credit card on file will allow you to avoid going to Guest Services on the last evening or worse, on the last morning of the cruise when it can involve waiting in long lines. In effect, you have 'Express Checkout' just like at a Disney Resort.

Has anyone ever put a state room credit on their room, my question is if you don't use it all will Disney give you the money back?

When did this $400 limit go into effect? We cruised in Oct. 2000, & We had one charge to our card for everything. The bill was under our door Saturday morning, just like WDW resorts.

We checked our bill with guest services mid way thru the cruise. We found a very large error on the bill ( that they promptly corrected) If the $400 rule was in effect then, this erroneous charge would never had gone through... It's actually good that they are doing that now.

Mjasp, no, use it or lose it. :) No one EVER has trouble spending a stateroom credit; the tips alone would eat up most credits with no problem.

Mjasp -

Are you referring to putting a cash deposit on your room account, such as $800 or something like that? For example, if you put $800 on the account and then only spent $675, what would happen to the remaining $125? If so, I'm sure you could get the balance that wasn't spent returned to you.

If you're referring to an onboard credit, such as the DCL onboard credit for Castaway Club return cruisers or the Disney Club Card for $50, then I believe it would be like Webmaster Michelle said, it's gone if you don't spend it.

Al,

Yes, I am talking about a cash credit, my own money (not DCL credit)

Michelle, Is that what you were talking about?

I feel pretty certain that was what Michelle was talking about. So there was some confusion here... but I think we all understand each other now.

So to summarize, if you have a ship board credit (ie from DU or DCL) it is a "use it or lose it" situation. You can put cash down and a credit card. You can keep checking your balance throughout the cruise, and either put more cash down or use your credit card (ie for express checkout). Right?????:)

Let me see if I can help out here....

On our January cruise...we opted to use cash. We also had a $200 Castaway Club shipboard credit..

I did not put any money on my account until I knew this 200 had been spent. I then went
to Guest Services and put down the 400 limit they had given us. I went to GS probably on
Wednesday and had like $50 left of the 400. Like Michelle said, it goes pretty quick with
Spa, Palo's, etc. On Friday after we got back on the ship after CC, I went down and paid what we owed at that time. Then on Friday night around midnight, I went and paid off the balance.

You do need to check your account though. On the Wednesday I went to check my balance, there were charges on my account for Treasure Ketch or Mickey's Mates..I can't remember which one...anyway....I told the girl I hadn't even been in the stores yet so how could I have
charges there. She pulled the tickets up and sure enough....we had been purchasing pins
at Pin Trading...and that's what they were charged as...the stores!!!!

Anyway...hope this helps..............

Mjasp, sorry for the confusion. I thought you were asking about a special credit from Disney such as a Castaway Club credit. Those are the "use it or lose it" credits.

If you're just putting money down against your shipboard account then you would get back any overpayment you made.

Hope that helps! :)
