My DD's small, private elementary school has a fall festival every year. It has a "country" theme. Tickets are all inclusive, food and small rides, bounce houses, rock climbing walls, pony rides... activities like crafts, a cake walk... BBQ food, etc.
Someone had the idea to have a "chili cookoff" ..not as a fundraiser, cuz the tickets are all inclusive.. but just to be a "fun" aside to the rest of the event. Somehow, the person with this "great idea" couldn't do it, so I was standing there as she realized it and I kind of got roped into it. I realize I could have said no, so I don't want to complain *too* much. LOL.
Anyway, I want to tell you what I have planned, and you can add suggestions or share your event rules with me.
This is going to be SUPER low key. We have 12 entrants. The whole festival is from 4 pm to 8 pm. I stated in the contest rules that the judging will take place at 5 pm, so all chili needs to be heated and in a crockpot before that, along with a serving utensil. I think we will number the chilis, so that the entrants are anonymous so no one can claim favoritism. We will also choose maybe 3 judges and keep them secret, too. Probably the principal, the handyman and maybe a teacher.
I am thinking of covering the tables with butcher paper and writing the numbers in front of each crock pot, along with the name of the chili (Chili Picante, Hearty and Healthy Chili, etc...whatever the entrants named it.)
We can take a bowl of each chili along with 3 spoons for each bowl to the judges in another room. They will all have family and friends at the festival, so they won't want to be in there too long. They can decide which one tastes best (since there is only 12 entrants, we won't do categories such as "most unique" or "hottest" or whatever) and it can be announced by the DJ. At that time, we can write the chili cooks' names on the butcher paper next to the chili's name and number. People can sample the chili until it is all gone. We will have little tiny cups and little tiny spoons to give out samples.
Sorry so long! If you want to add anything to this, or can see a problem with my plan that maybe I am not seeing, or learned anything when you hosted such an event, please share!
Thanks!
