Need Help on my 1st design!!!

Hi, I am giving this whole design thing a try as I thought it would be fun, but it is really starting to frustrate me! I am using Photoshop and I have a clip art from disneyclips.com and can't get rid of the white background on it. Could someone please help me!!!
Also I would like to know if there are any tutorials on getting started, I have searched but maybe I am not searching in the right place! I have read and re-read the sticky of FAQ. Thanks in advance for your help!
