Need Help Making Native American Headband w/ Feather.

DS needs to wear an Indian headband at his Cub Scout Blue & Gold banquet, but I don't know how to make one. Something simple, but nice. No construction paper feathers. LOL Any ideas?

I hand beaded a headband when I was younger...it was alot of fun..and easy to do. All you'd need is a strip of leather. sead beads of various colors, thread and a beading loom. Not only beading and making the headband was fun...but designing the pattern was a blast. I did mine when I was in campfire...we had to make our own gown and head band...along with picking a indian name...The headband design was a design of our indian name...layed out in beadwork...

It may sound hard and complex...but really it wasn't. And beading looms are not much $$.

If you were to take a narrow old belt or some non fraying piece of fabric(felt?), the length of his cir. of his head, you can then use dots of Tulip ,or other fabric paint in a tube and make dots of paint in a pattern. Stick to 5 to 7 dots across the width of the piece, and use simple shapes. An arrow, zig-zag, etc. It won't be very authentic, but it will be quick, cheap and easy.
Felt-$1 +/-, 5 colors of fabric paint, white, black, red, yellow, blue/or green- a package is about $3 at walmart, or 86 cents each for some brands. and then feathers? A.C.Moore had a package of bright color quills for $1 yesterday.

scrapperjill ~ Wow, that sounds nice. I was a Campfire Girl too. I had forgotten all about that ceremony. We didn't do anything that elaborate.

I just don't think I'd ever use the beading loom again. DH would have a fit if I spent money on something I'd only use once. I also don't have a lot of time to work on it. Nice idea though, thanks.

idofabric ~ I was thinking about using felt, but I thought it would look too plain. Using the fabric paints in little dots to look like beads is a great idea. Thanks! I'd like to find a pattern I could copy (from a real headband). Didn't have a lot of luck with internet searches.

You might be able to find some patches or Indian emblems in the fabric department or the jewelry making department of a craft store. You could sew these onto a leather headband and save yourself a lot of work. If you use some of the metal jewelry type pieces, you could always paint them to add color to your headband.

Thanks for all the great ideas, but I guess I don't need them now. Wednesday night at the den meeting the leader gave all the boys tan, felt bands to tie around their heads with a feather stuck in the back. They want all the boys to look alike. I was looking forward to making something. Oh, well.

At least I still get to make a side dish to take. I haven't decided what to make yet. Maybe I'll start a new thread to get ideas.
