we will be going to WDW in Dec (I know it's mot blazing hot then) my 2yr old has peanut allergy and we will be bringinge her epi pens and we need to keep them "room temp" what does everyone use to keep epi pens safe from high temps and low temps for that matter?? Thanks so much!

There are several companies that make a "cool pack" for insulin injectables that you can put in a purse or fanny pack etc. you put it in the fridge overnight and it will last all day.

here is one site:

I think that would be too cold for an epi pen.
Mine says keep between 59-86 degrees.
I think keeping it in a backpack or pocketbook would be fine.
I don't think it will be a problem.

Umm, my guess is that it would be way above 86 without some sort of cooling device in the summer heat, especially if it was in a purse/backpack/fannypack etc.

I am a fan of the various coolling systems, I even use the cooling tie on's that you soak in water, then wear when the crystals expand, and cool by evaporation.

I think OP should error on the side of caution, besides, it will give peace of mind that they are ready to go, and could extend the life of them (if not used) by not subjecting them to high heat!

I went last august with epipens an di just kept them in my purse and they were fine. Yes it does get extremely hot in florida but most of the time, you are in adn out of shade adn air conditioning in stores adn rides etc. that they dont reslly get direct sun adn heat. I asked 4 of my doctors about it before i went, one of which who has been to WDW with epipens for her son before, adn they all said that keeping them in my purse or a bag would be fine. BUT, that beig said, if your are still concerend, you can try adn find a cooling device, just dont have it go the opposite way and let them be too cold

I always just carry mine in my handbag, we live in the tropics in Australia, similar to Florida weather and even here I just carry them in my handbag, have been carrying them that way since the epipen was first made available after being invented and have never had a problem, prior to that had to carry a syringe and vile of adrenaline (best invention in my life was the epipen!). If I was going to the beach and it was going to be lying in the sun baking for hours on end then I would worry, but not everyday, wandering around. In December in Florida, I would not worry. But thats just me.

We use a hydration backpack for the parks.

We fill the bladder with ice and water before we leave the room and then add a cup or two of free ice water whenever necessary. Ours has several compartments. The one closest to the ice may be too cool, but the outer compartment would work well. We keep snacks in ours. They never get hot or melty, but they don't feel refrigerated either. The temperature of the bag would depend on how the compartments are configured, so you'd have to look at them in person.

This is a great option if you were planning to carry a small/medium sized bag anyway, and you also always have a drink available. My little ones won't drink with a meal, but they always wanted a drink while we were in line.

we go in Sept. andjust keep it in my messenger bag; but especially in December, no special cooling is needed.

We are also going in December! We love going that time of year to enjoy cooler touring (nothing to do with epi-pens) and it still feels warm compared to our MI weather! That said we have a anaphylactic peanut/treenut son and always have at least two pens with us I always keep them in my purse (light color). I was concerned about this too the first time, but it has not been a problem. I make sure not to leave my purse in direct sun on a table or bench. We also keep a couple in the room safe for back up. If you have any othe questions you are welcome to pm me. We have taken him to Disney about ten times. He is 7 years old. We stay on property and have eaten at most table service restaurants/ and many counter service if you want a restaurant peanut review ;).

We are going this weekend with my allergic 7yo ds - and have been there with him and his epi-pens probably 8 6 times now - never once have we had a problem with keeping them in my purse - you are on and off rides, in and out of buildings, etc. so much that you should be fine. Our allergist told us not to worry about them - just do with them what I would if I were going to take him to the playground for an hour in the summer (which for me is leave them in my purse). We do always have an extra few packed away in the hotel though just in case - that and b/c he is extremely anaphylactic so you can never travel with too many epi-pens!

We carry ours in a backpack or wife's handbag. You really don't need to bring a cooler. You do want to keep them out of direct sunlight. You know don't leave them in your car on days above 60 degrees or below 40. They're pretty durable. If your stay at the beach or pool bury the pen under a towel or clothes not near the very top. At our pool club I keep them in middle of the towel bag. If your flying keep or bring the box with you to pass security.
:surfweb: Don't forget your Benadrl too.

Epi pens can't be refrigerated (don't do ice packs or cold packs) and shouldn't be exposed to extreme heat (glove box, direct sun for periods of time - like in a handbag in direct sunlight)......but can take higher temperatures than the range stated for limited periods of time.....the critical giveaway that an epi pen had too much heat exposure is the fluid turns brown from oxidation......in an effort to keep the pen within stated temperature ranges (and tolerances) you can wrap it in a bunch of paper towels while you're in a cool room, place it in the inner most section of your bag and do not place the bag in direct sunlight - the ambient temperature around the epi pen should remain BELOW the outside temperature for a couple of hours done this way (as in ambient temperature of the room you wrapped the pen in)......and if you're going in and out of air conditioning, it'll last longer. It's extreme heat you must avoid to keep the pen viable if needed.

But what do you do when you are on the beach for a few hours at a time in the direct sun?

Two weeks till the first beach trip with DGS's epi-pen.

When I was younger my allergist recommended using insulated baby bottle holders to hold my epi pens. They are soft, and easily fit into a backpack. I don't really worry about my epi-pens anymore. I'm not sure if they have become more heat resistant, or if I've become more lax...but the baby bottle bags will give you an added layer. Have fun!
