We recently refinanced our mortgage with a local credit union. Our original mortgage was with Wells Fargo and we had automatic withdrawal from our bank account for our mortgage payment. Apparently, the withdrawal process is controlled by Western Union.

So the refinance closed and the original loan was paid in full. Stupid us assumed that they wouldn't keep withdrawing payments for the original mortgage! My husband called our new lender, Wells Fargo, and then Western Union.

Our new lender says they can stop payment for a $30 fee but if the old loan ever changes banks then there is a chance they could keep withdrawing in the future. Wells Fargo tells us we need to cotnact Western Union. Western Union tells us to go online at Wells Fargo and they have a stop payment form. I cannot find that form to which they are referring.

Does anyone have experience or advice to offer?

I have refinanced a many times. Sounds like your Title Company messed up to me.

Call Wells Fargo again and sit on them and MAKE THEM fix it.

Thank you. This is very frustrating. My husband is going to call when he gets a chance. I will post updates.

If her payment is through a third party Wells Fargo will may not be able to fix it.
I have WF for my mortgage and we do the accelerator program through Western Union. When there is a change in my payment I have to notify Western Union myself to have it changed. When we first got our mortgage though I never had to do that, it has changed in the last couple years though, the payment amount is no longer changed without us notifying WU.
Right now they are not taking out enough to cover my full payment, but since its dh's name only on the accelerator program account I can't even change the amount they withdrawal. Which is ridiculous since my name is on the mortgage through Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo even tried on my behalf to add me, but was unable.

OP, I do have a phone number for the accelerator program if you want it. I'm not sure if that is what you are doing or if that is the number you have already called. PM me and I can find it for you.

It is not a problem with the title company. This is a lender problem.

When loans are paid off it often takes lenders a while to stop the payment collection process. Payments will stop and all payments will be refunded but it can take up to 60 or 90 days.

OP, you had no reason to believe that payments would continue to be drawn. You can continue to contact the lender but it is easier to go to your bank branch or call them and stop the payment.

Our bank branch is sending us a stop unauthorized payment form and we will get that done ASAP. Thank you. In the meantime, we will also be contacting the lender.

Well I just spoke with my husband and he was told by a manager at Western Union that he needed to talk to Wells Fargo again. So he called them and persisted and they were able to cancel the recurring payments and gave him a cancellation number and said our refund would be put back next Friday. So hopefully this takes care of it! Fingers crossed. Thanks all!
