Need help getting pumped up about SSR...

wow, awesome thread....thanks for passing along Granny!

Deb

Deb,

If you're looking for people just head over to Artist's Palette around 9am, and any mealtime hour. It gets positively jammed. The main pool, High Rock Springs, also can gather a crowd on Sundays, Fridays, evenings and any genuinely good pool weather day. (The only time no one's in it is maybe 7am.)

The resort is much quieter than the BWV/BCV area but that's in a good way. It's spread out nature and miles of scenic walking paths give people a chance to commune with nature without having to block out the sounds of other not-so peaceful-minded guests.

I highly recommend early morning walks for mug refills. At 7am, you get up with the birds and other wildlife. By 9am, the busses are rolling and people have emerged for their park days. Also, find those walking paths to DTD. Congress Park is the shorter one to shopping at Marketplace, but the golf course/West Side path (by the ferry dock) is the shortcut to Cirque et. al. During the daytime hours, West Side is pretty quiet, which makes it fun to browse.

As for distance to the parks, it's really not far. EPCOT is a mile away. We've gotten there within 5 minutes by car and bus. (Beat the bus one day by a minute.) Only one that seems truly far by car is Magic Kingdom. (Because you can't park outside it. Take the bus instead.) By bus, Animal Kingdom is the farthest (stops at Blizzard Beach first). Take the car instead there.

If you find yourself feeling lonely and want to trip over people, just head over to DTD. By noon, the place is packed. In the evenings, it spreads out to PI and West Side as well.

Don't forget to dine at Raglan Road! The Irish Dancer is there every day but Sunday. The one-man band takes over after that.

I was also like you. I was hesitant about staying at ssr. We bought there almost two years ago and have stayed at Beach Club, Boardwalk, and Old Key West. I thought there was no way I could like ssr as much as the others.
Well, we just stayed there in September and absolutely fell in love with it. Everything about it is great. The food was good, the pool was nice, movies at the pool, DD across the water. Boy, what else can I say. I was very pleasantly surprised. Hope you have a good stay. :thumbsup2

We've got a 5-day reservation for a 1 br at SSR in January. I had only booked it a few weeks ago and the only thing available was SSR. For some reason, I'm just not that excited to be going to SSR even though I do want to try all the resorts. The last time we were at WDW in May of 2006, we toured SSR and it just seemed so.....quiet. There didn't seem to be anyone around (possibly because they were still building?)

Right now we're wait-listed for the other resorts. But, can anyone send some positive vibes to me regarding SSR? I'm sure there are plenty of you who have many good things to say about it. I really want to find reasons to actually like SSR and I know I shouldn't be so quick to have a negative opinion since I've never stayed there.

Thanks,

Deb

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. SSR is not BWV's at night, but all you have to do is walk over to DTD if you want excitement or to extend your day. I prefer to go back to a quiet resort after a day in the parks. SSR is a beautiful and peaceful resort, I guess that is what I like about it.

I don't know why SSR has gotten such a poor rep. That is my home resort and I LOVE IT. Being so new, it looks great everywhere..lovely theming, relaxed quiet atmosphere, stuff to do, GREAT counter service, tons of close proximity parking, beautiful landscaping, nice location, THE SPA!!! AHHHHH!!, the pools are nice....don't knock it til you've tried it. We have DVC friends that won't even think of trying it. God only knows why.

We love SSR! We stayed there in April and it is just beautiful. In fact, we are trying BWV in February, just cause we want to try them all, and I'm worried that I'll miss SSR big time! (doing SSR again in May) Boarwalk looks nice, but I've read the rooms are worn some, and the room we had at SSR was top notch. We loved doing DTD at night, the grounds were amazing, and even the CS seemed high end, just as SSR seems very high end. Our family feels as though we could stay there for a month and just enjoy the sophisticated beauty of this Grand Resort. If you like classy, you will love SSR!

SSR is a beautiful resort. The rooms have an elegant and sophisticated décor. However, the understated theme just lacks "something". I understand what folks mean when they say it lacks some Disney magic. Some folks feel that way, while others love the subdued theme. To each his own.

That said, while SSR is not my first choice, I will stay there from time to time. It is a nice resort and I certainly wouldn't be sad to stay there.

SSR is our home resort. We stayed in a one bedroom there for 10 days last month. We were thrilled with it. The resort is beautiful, our villa was immaculate, the resort is quiet but we never felt isolated. We were in the Grandstand section and we loved the location and the theme pool there. The main pool was a huge hit with our kids. They loved the slide. Dh and I loved it too. ;)

The bus service was perfect. The best we have had in the past 11 years. There was never a wait to or from the parks.

The walk to DTD was nice. A little long from Grandstand but, we enjoyed it.

The decor is great. We enjoyed everything about it.

We will be staying at SSR for many vacations to come.

I felt the same way you did. I was staying there after the cruise and really wanted VWL. In fact I was so desperate to swap that I was even calling member services from the ship to see if there was a cancellation and that cost mega dollars.

But, I was so glad I couldn't get a trade. SSR is beautiful, and you probably know already, you can't really tell what a resort is going to be like until you actually stay there.

The main pool and hot tub are lovely. There is a fantastic spa and it's absolutely brilliant being able to walk to downtown disney. Plus the accomodations are lovely.

The only thing I thought could improve was the sit down restaurant but I haven't stayed for a year so it may already be a lot better. But they sell lovely appetisers in the bar and you can also play snooker there free of charge. And the flat bread you can get in the counter service at the shop is extremely lovely.

You'll have a fabulous time.

There's no worries for us about transportation because we always rent a car.

If you are renting a car you will really like it. When we stayed there last August we always got a parking spot within 30ft of our entrance to the building. It is also very easy to drive off Disney World as SSR is probably the closest DVC resort to the "real" world.

We love SSR! We're headed back in December for a DVC week. (Sun-Thurs ;) ) Of course, we are all adults and we do like the calm there after a busy day at the parks. We usually do breakfast in the villa, head off to a park for a few hours, come back for some downtime at the pool-then we're all ready to go back for our dinner ADR's and evening fun! DN likes the proximity to DtD, and she'll probably like it even more now that she's legal! Mom and Dad like the relaxation and how comfortable the beds are!!

We've stayed all over the park in the years we've been to WDW-Contemporary, GF, Poly, Boardwalk, Coronodo Springs, the Swan and a week at Pop. SSR and OKW are the only DVC resorts we stayed in at the park, but we loved them both.

we absolutely LOVE SSR!!!
it is second only to BWV's for us (& that's only cos nothing can ever move the BW outta first place! :lmao: ).
stunning resort with great trans & entertainment/food options. VERY clean & elegant.

if it ever came down to our having to sell one of our contracts (BWV, BCV, & SSR), BCV would def go before SSR

OH my gosh....I am lost on this post?

SSR is our absolute favorite resort and we have stayed in all but the new AKV since they have opened. Otherwise, we have been guests at all the DVC resorts plus all but 2 of the other resorts. (yes, we are very fortunate as DVC'ers:)

We have had around 6 or 7 stays there in the last 3 years. Everything from studios to one and two bedroom villas. Our rooms have always been immaculate and in good locations. The CM's are super! The food court always has great sandwiches...pizza....desserts...etc. The Turf Club is absolutely one of the best sit down meals we had the last trip. The buses run very much every 15 minutes and there is NO sharing. The pools are all great. The spa is one of the best on Disney property. The location next to DTD is the best. We love to stroll over there and shop.

I just don't understand why you would not be excited to stay there? Perhaps there are some negative posts on here? Why don't you go with an open mind and form your own opinion. Afterall, a vacation is only what you make of it. Personally, I would be thrilled to death if I were getting ready to head to SSR!! just my 2 cents worth...

all the best,
Esmerelda :)

Well, as I mentioned, when we toured it in 2006, it seemed rather quiet...almost deserted but that may be because it was still in its infancy.
I do plan on going with an open mind and forming my own opinion. I did however, want to hear some reassuring words from those who've been and did in fact, love it.

Thanks everyone, who has helped to "reassure me" ;)

I'm a total BWV lover but after our stay at SSR last week, I'm in love! My husband and I spent the entire vacation commenting on how beautiful it was and how we couldn't believe what people had been saying about it. It truly is more beautiful in person. I would be happy even if we never got the chance to stay anywhere else again.
It's funny because I'm not a big fan of a couple of resorts that are very popular with everyone else, but I'm a huge SSR fan! I guess that's why Disney has so many different themes for all us DVC'ers! :hippie:

We tried SSR on our last trip. We had stayed at BCV the first part, but our last night moved over to SSR since we were spending the evening at DTD/PI. Plus I really wanted to see if I liked it.

Yes, it is quiet. Which I do like - it's feels homey. I would feel good about taking my family there.

And yes, it is spread out. I certainly wouldn't want to have to walk to the pool or food court from some of those buildings.

But it's clean! You could tell it's a new resort because the rooms were nearly spotless. I really liked that.

And the pool was really neat! I can imagine DD having a great time there in a few years.

(not great pics, but you get the idea)

Last, the view from the room. It speaks for itself!

Oh, one more thing. I am a die hard fan of the BC/BW area but if I couldn't buy DVC at any of those resorts, I'd choose SSR!

No need to get nasty...just thought I'd get some friendly people giving me some positive reasons to try out SSR.

This is exactly what turns me off to wanting to join in on thread discussions.
