Need help getting pumped up about SSR...

We've got a 5-day reservation for a 1 br at SSR in January. I had only booked it a few weeks ago and the only thing available was SSR. For some reason, I'm just not that excited to be going to SSR even though I do want to try all the resorts. The last time we were at WDW in May of 2006, we toured SSR and it just seemed so.....quiet. There didn't seem to be anyone around (possibly because they were still building?)

Right now we're wait-listed for the other resorts. But, can anyone send some positive vibes to me regarding SSR? I'm sure there are plenty of you who have many good things to say about it. I really want to find reasons to actually like SSR and I know I shouldn't be so quick to have a negative opinion since I've never stayed there.

Thanks,

Deb

I can't help you because I'm in the same exact boat. Looking forward to Disney but not SSR. Waitlisted for anywhere else.

Well, now I don't feel so guilty :thumbsup2

But I have to believe there are good things about SSR and I just haven't had a chance to experience them to make it real! We own at BCV which I do love because of SAB and it's proximity to Epcot and when we stayed at OKW, we loved that because of the size of the units.

I really need to hear some of the good things SSR has to offer.

You're within walking distance of DtD.

"Quiet" is what appeals to me about SSR and OKW, I know I personally would never be comfortable at BWV or BCV, even though they are very popular resorts. I like my "down time."

We stayed at SSR in Congress Park 2 years ago at Christmas and had a wonderful time. We requested a 3rd floor 2 bdrm w/ a view of DTD which we got. Great units; ELEVATORS (which OKW doesn't have); parking right outside your building. We had a quiet pool very close. The main pool is very nice. And, now I understand that the full service restaurant there, the Turf Club, I think, is quite good. I also liked the ability to walk to DTD. OKW will always be my favorite, but I'd stay at SSR again. I think you'll have a great time.

I would love to stay at SSR for a non-park vacation. Would love to be able to walk to DTD, make plans for Cirque Du-Solie, shop, swim at the pool, golf, take in the SPA. I just wish you could request a building like Congress Park or GrandStand. So its on my list, just not in the next 2 yrs! :goodvibes

I stayed in a studio at SSR last month with 2 girlfriends and we had a fantastic time. SSR is my home resort and we booked quite late so that is why we stayed there.

We had a room in Congress Park on the 3rd floor overlooking DTD which was fantastic - great view. Great little quiet pool right by there and a really short walk to DTD, PI etc which was really nice. Close to the bus stop and also the last stop at the resort so quick to all the parks.

Main pool is really nice and the counter service is very well stocked and really big - lots of choice.

You can rent bikes there and if you play golf you are obviously right by the golf course.

We all really enjoyed it and even though I want to try all the DVC resorts I will definitely be staying there again. In fact my husband and I are back there in May taking some friends and our god daughter.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised with your stay there as there is much more to it than meets the eye! And lets face it - its Disney so how could you not have a great time!!

... We stayed at BWV and I wanted to check out SSR, We went there swimming, THE POOL IS GREAT!! I liked it better than the pool at BWV.
Plus the counter service looks really good (considering BWV's lack there of)
We went to a couple other resorts and checked them out (WL, AKV, and OKW)

I wasn't sure I would like SSR from things I read here on the boards.
But after I visited I am not sure why... I liked it has much as I liked the others.
its so beautful, I can't wait to stay there now.

You will have a wonderful time!! (I would not let things you read on the boards turn you off)

The advantage that SSR has IS that it's QUIET and near DTD. There is also a Spa. I believe DVC members receive a discount. Years ago, when my children were small, we would stay at the villas near DTD on extended stays. On shorter stays I much prefer one of the villas at Epcot. Sorry I can't help more.

The walkways are beautiful and peaceful with the foliage, lagoons, water fountains, laterns, etc. All the buildings are bright & cheery. Everything is sparkling clean. The rooms are still fairly new & in great condition. The main pool area is great with the rock theme & you can walk up the stairs and overlook the whole pool area. The quiet pool areas are lovely too! There are a lot of activities for the kids or adults too at community hall, not to mention the rentals, and boat rides to DTD.

You may not be walking distance to any parks, but there is no resort that is near EVERY one. So you have to drive or take a bus no matter where you stay if you want to visit all 4 parks. Plus as others have mentioned, you're walking distance to DTD & it looks beautiful all lit up at night. At least to me it does! What's not to love??? ;)

I don't mind the quiet aspect of SSR, but DTD has absolutely zero appeal to me. As i said, I'm waitlisted for any and all of the others. Hopefully something will come through.

Not an owner, but have a res at OKW (studio) for 12-5 to 12-12

Don't know much about any of the resorts, Susiebea why is OKW your favorite?
Any tips on what area to request?

Thanks for the feedback. princess:

Stayed at SSR several times. It is a great resort and we love staying there.

As others have mentioned, it is close to DTD. Within walking distance is food, shopping and entertainment. The view of the golf course or DTD is very nice as well.

The Artist's Palette has great counter service. They accept DDE there so you can get 20% off all meals!

Overall, we like SSR because it truly feels like a second home and not just a hotel room. We are separated from the crowds, but close enough to the parks for easy access.

My daughter and I have stayed at SSR twice and we love it! Yes, it was when we went on short notice and it was all that was available, but it is great to be in WDW no matter what! One time, we were in a ground floor studio and looked out the window to a horse and carriage going by our patio door! We love the pool, we actually won a trivia contest there one afternoon, and especially the mug station by the main pool. I love to walk, so that is not a problem for me, and I enjoy having my car close by. We tend to drive a bit more when at SSR or OKW, but that is OK, it also encourages us to get offsite a bit more, to church and such.
We have stayed in all the onsite properties, and will definitely stay there again.

SSR is:

Quiet. This is a biggy for us. If you have ever stayed at POP during peak season, you know what we mean.

Secluded. The size of the resort lends itself to us feeling, at times, like we are the only people there. This is DW favorite.

Conveniently located near DTD. (Lego, Toys, Games etc). This is a biggy for my boys.

Theming is nice. It is real subdued and easy on the eyes. Light and airy.

As an added bonus, the arcade there is very large (I always go to the arcade w/the boys at least once a day on vacation).

Now, we haven't actually "stayed" there yet, but did tour the place extensively when we bought in Sept 2007. :thumbsup2 Above are our impressions. YMMV.

We will know better if above impressions hold up when we stay at SSR for Spring Break 2008.

I can't imagine SSR being a "let-down" to anybody but do understand that we have different perceptions of what makes a good resort.

I have yet to stay there, but looking forward to 2 days after our DCL cruise in December. My sister and I stayed at AKV, which was my first DVC stay as a member and enjoyed it. But on a trip to DTD, I looked over at SSR and smiled because that was my 'home':goodvibes . The draw for hubby and I was DTD - close to food, shopping and entertainment, plus it didn't have that 'hotel' feel to it.

OKW is our home resort - it was the ONLY DVC resort when we bought (um, yeah I'm THAT old). I like it because of the size of the units - all except the studios are significantly larger. I like that you can pull your car up right outside your unit - no schleping groceries through a parking lot and down long hallways (one thing I especially didn't like about BWV). I like the water taxi to DTD. I like the golf/water views. I like Olivia's. I like that it's NOT near everything, that it's quiet. I like that there are full-sized washers and dryers. :cool2:

My teenagers will not let us stay anywhere else. They love being able to walk to downtown disney after the parks close.

wow, thanks everyone for all of your positive comments! I knew I'd get some good vibes! And you're absolutely right....what can be bad...you're in Disney!
There's no worries for us about transportation because we always rent a car. The pool sounds great...I think our kids will enjoy it.

Thanks again!

Deb

Deb....I think these thousands of posts on this thread say it better than I can...
