OK, we are set to depart a week from Sunday, January 23rd for an 8 night stay @ Boardwalk. Well today, both my boys (age 3 and 7) come down with ear infections, and the little one has walking pneumonia on top of it. So my dilemma is, what are our options? Do I just give them the antibiotics and hope that they are better in a week, or try to cancel, and rebook? What are the rules, I know the points are in "holding", but our UY is Oct. so as long as we can rebook a trip by Sept. 30th, we're OK right? Or am I wrong, am I totally screwed? Oh, I already checkin in online, does that put the nail in the coffin???? Please help out a mom who's freaking out right now.

(BTW, if we are able to rebook, do you think we'll be able to find availability for the first week in May?)
TIA

You still have a week for them to get better. I would just keep the trip as planned...

^^^agree....you have lots of time for them to recover...my kids are much older now but when they were younger they would recover from pretty much anything in a few days.....unless you know from prior experience it takes your kids longer to recover right now i'd keep everything as planned

You have 9 days to go and antibiotics. I agree that kids bounce back fast, so with the meds, the ear infections should get better. Even though the doses might last 10 days, my kids were already feeling better a few days later. If you are worried, ask your pediatrician, but I think 9 days is plenty of time.

I would spring for the expensive anitbiotics. I had that happen to me right before a trip and the doc was going to give me a Z-Pack. I said, if money were no issue, would you prescribe something different? She said yes and it worked.

P.S. If you're not familiar with Culturelle, I highly recommend using it when using strong anitbiotics.

If you're flying, call their pediatrician & mention it; otherwise i'd think antibiotics should have them good to go by the trip. I'd just try to keep them corraled in stroller as much as possible & take lots of naps.

ps many antibiotics cause increased sun sensitivity, slather on the SPFs:)

My DD was put on antibiotics the day before we flew out and my nephew was diagnosed with pneumonia about a week before they met us down there. Take the first few days easy and then enjoy the rest of the trip :)

I would ask their doctor, they are much better equipped to know that you should do than any of us.

And yes I think you would be able to find something the first of May and the weather is wonderful. It is down right cold right now.

Thank you for all your replies. I did talk to the doctor, we were there yesterday. He seems to think they'll be fine. But I have never seen my boys this sick before. My little one, who is going to turn 4, has never been on antibiotics before. My kids are rarely sick, so this seems really, really huge to me. I just don't want to bring them if their not well. I want them to enjoy it. I guess I'll have to wait it out a few more days.
Thanks again.

A week is a long time, the antibolics should work in that amount of time. You didn't say if you were flying or driving to Disney. Ear infections are tough if you are flying. But reguardless I think if I was you I would still keep the reservations they should be well by then.

We are flying. Flying can be brutal even on healthy children's ears. That was one of my concerns. I guess I'll see how they are after the weekend, then make a decision.

Trust your Mother's instinct and your doctor's advice. As great as a Disney trip is, it's not going anywhere.

I agree, flying and an earache would be horrible.

One reason I think so many people get sick at Disney during the holidays and colder weather, is sick people on planes that should have stayed home.

I hope they feel better soon, but if you have to cancel you can always plan another time when you know everyone will enjoy it.

buy earplanes (they work great!!), and atlk to the ped about giving them a cold medicine before flying - they should be fine even if there is still fluid in their ears (what causes pain at take-off/landing) then.
hth:)

Hope your kids end up feeling better. I know everybody said you should continue with your trip, but nobody mentioned your other option. Because of your October UY, you would have to re-book by May 31st because of the requirement that you can't book and travel in the last 4 months of your UY. You would indeed have those points in the Holding Acct as you mentioned so as long as you could re-book before the end of May and travel by Sep 30, you'd be golden. Good luck!

Not true. The "rule of four" you mentioned only applies to certain trades out (most Disney collection, for example). It does not apply to DVC resorts. OP could use Holding points at any DVC resort at any time until the end of her use year (Sept 30) but can only reserve a max of 60 days out.

OP, good luck. If the kids aren't a lot better by Tuesday, I'd go back & see if they'll switch the antibiotic. Good luck! Keep us posted!

Thanks! I'll be taking them back on Tues. either way. My youngest seems to be bouncing back, but my oldest still has a high fever and is complaining of "thumping" in his ear. I guess I learned my lesson, and will always buy trip insurance in the future. I know it's possible to rebook, as my points are good until Sept. 30th. But the booking 60 days out is a little frustrating.
We still may go, a lot can happen in a week. But I am so sad. I was so excited about this trip. We even have a reservation for the coveted "Le Cellier"!

OP, our older dd lived on antibiotics!!! She had repeat ear infections---to the point where she got ear tubes implanted 3 separate times.

Having said that the antibiotics always took effect within 2 days. She go from fever, oozing green gook, etc, to totally better. Your odds are excellent that both kids will be 100 percent by next weekend.
