Need help from fellow teachers...

I am looking at possibly relocating and would like some info about other areas of the country and teaching... I now live on the coast of VA but would like to move further south or more inland if possible, but not too far either... anyone a teacher and willing to tell me what district they teach for, the good and bad of the district, and how good the schools are in that district? I have two sons, would be fourth and sixth grade next year... I am certified in middle and high school.

I live in upstate SC, fairly close to NC border, and teaching jobs are hard to find right now. NC has had many lay offs the last couple years. SC hasn't laid off anyone that I know of, but has not replaced, when possible, when teachers leave. I work about an hour from home and can't find anything closer. Hopefully things will change in the next year or 2. Right now it all depends on what you can teach. You might have an easier time with ms/hs, most folks I know have been looking for elem. level jobs. It's not that absolutely noone is being hired, its just that the competition for available jobs is crazy. If you do consider SC remember to look at the individual districts. It's very possible to have a great district next to a rock bottom one. I have no complaints about the district we live in, the 2 just south of us I'd never put my kids in.

I am amazed, given how important education should be, how wildly salaries vary across the U.S. for teachers.
Here they start at $45,000 right out of college and top out at $70,000 after 8 years for a 9 month contract. There are stipends if you have a MA, PhD, teach summer school. or coach a sports, lead the band, etc.
