I would like to back up my Quicken files, but I guess I need to format a CD first. How do I do this? I'm on a Compaq and using Windows XP.

TIA!! :D

I don't think you should need to format a CD. Just put it in the drive, and save your files to it. It's always worked for me!:teeth:

I don't have to format CDR's, but I do have to format CD-RW's. The recording program that came with my computer has a format option.

Win XP has a built in CD recording program. What you need to do if you're using the XP program instead of a burning software is this:

Right click on the start button
Click on Explore
Find the file you want to burn, then right click on it
Click on Send to (CD burner drive letter)

On your system tray you should have a message that says you have files ready to be written on a CD. Click on the message balloon.

Another window will open. Click on the file and on the left frame click on Write these files to CD. It will write the file(s) you selected on the CD-R/CD-RW. No need to format the CD.

Hope that helps

Thanks Everyone. Still not working. The error says I need to send it to the proper directory. But this disk is blank and has no directory.

For now, I used an old disk. But if you have any more suggestions, it would be appreciated. I would really like to learn how to do this!

Thanks! :D

Good you should ask. I have problems doing this with my computer as well. We have 2 with XP. Supposedly same computers got at the same time. #1 will write to cd as described above and #2 will not....go figure?

For me,with my Windows ME, it used to be as simple as Dan says. Then I got a new computer with XP home edition. Somewhere there is a conflict, as I cannot backup from Quicken using the CD-RW drive. It says it cannot write to the disc. If I back it up to the hard drive then put it on the CD-RW it works just fine. Also when I moved my Quicken to my new computer I could not restore my backup directly from the disc, I had to put the data on my hard drive and restore it from there. My laptop has XP pro, and it works just fine, but not on my desktop.

You should use a CD-RW, and format it in the CD-RW drive.
Thank you, Dan. But this is precisely what I can't do! I used to back up on my old computer just fine. Then I had the same type problems as elgerber. But my 2 formatted disks now say they are corrupt. Whatever that means! I ended up using one of those corrupt disks to see if it would work. Quicken says the file backed up successfully, so I'm assuming it worked. The last time I tried to restore from old to new computers, though, I ended up with a mess and had to start a whole new data file. Oh these new conveniences!

So, I guess my next question is how do I format a disk using Windows XP?

Go to 'My Computer, right click on the drive letter of the CD, and go to the 'format' choice. Are you using RW discs? If not, you will need a new CD each time you back up.

Thank you Dan! My nephew bought a stack of CD's while he was here for the funeral. They're CD-R. RATS! I'll have to go purchase some CD-RW disks. In the mean time think I'll do some learnin' on the other.

Thanks again!
