Need help finding/making a certain holiday decoration

DH is coordinating a "Christmas market" in our town and needs some help. I told him I was sure that my Dis friends would find a sollution to his problem

Well, here goes. In Denmark we frequently visited a christmas market (outdoors) where they had hot coal to warm your hands over, like in the old days (vision 1930´s). He needs something like that.

The coals that were used, seemed to get extra hot and stayed that way for a long time. We don´t know if there was also gas involved. Does anyone know what we mean and where to find this?

Are you sure they were actually coals? My guess is that they might have been using sauna rocks. Sauna rocks have a particular mineral content that is very good at holding heat but not exploding, and they quarry them to be uniform in size.

The problem with using them for something like you are planning is that they are expensive, about $80/sack.
