Hi! We just got back from our annual trip to WDW last weekend (boo-hoo):(

We loved all the Christmas decor! While in Epcot, we visited the Weinkeller shop and they had a red wine on display. I bought a glass of it and it was just divine! It was almost like a red wine with cider in it and they served it hot. They had the bottle on display and it had a wintery snowy looking picture on the label. I believe the name had two words to it that may have started with a 'G' (I'm not sure though).

I wish so much that I had bought a bottle to bring back home, but I didn't. And I didn't write down the name of it either (was definitely a German name that I couldn't even pronounce).

If anybody out there knows the name of the wine, that would really make my day! Also, if anybody knows where I can get a bottle online, that would double make my day!!

I believe that is Gluwein - it's like a mulled red wine - that sounds like what you are describing. You don't buy it like they serve it - it's heated red wine with spices and things steeped in it. (Edited to say -- I'm not SURE that's how Disney does it, but traditionally that is the case - you can make your own in a crock pot pretty easily).

Yes -- you are describing Gluhwein, which is a way of preparing a hot, mulled wine and not a type of wine in and of itself. ALthough there ARE places that bottle a mixture called Gluhwein, it will always taste better if you make it yourself.

You want to start with a red wine that you like -- something fairly full-bodied but not wickedly expensive. I don't know if it is available in your area, but we really like Big House Red, which is an inexpensive blend.

Here are two sets of instructions -- we prefer the first recipe, which has the addition of some brandy. I just scale the recipe down, usually, to make a couple of glasses:

Toast 3 cinnamon sticks, 10 whole cloves, 10 black peppercorns, and 2 crushed green cardamom pods over medium heat until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add 2 750mL bottles of wine, 1/2 cup sugar, 4 strips of orange zest, partially cover and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until heated through and steaming but not boiling.

Strain mixture through a mesh strainer and return to pan. Add 2 T of brandy, plus more to taste, plus additional sugar if needed.

Recipe 2:
Ingredients: A bottle of dry red wine, one lemon, 2 sticks of cinnamon, 3 cloves, 3 tablespoons of sugar, some cardamom (or ginger).
Directions: Heat the red wine in a pot (don't boil). Cut the lemon into slices and add to the wine. Then add the cinnamon, cloves, sugar and a little cardamom (to taste). Heat everything for about 5 minutes - do not boil - and let stand for about an hour. Before serving, reheat and strain. Serve in prewarmed glasses or mugs.

Enjoy! Gluhwein is sold on nearly every street corner in cities in Germany during December -- a really wonderful aspect of Christmas!!

Glühwein really is a staple for Christmastime here in Germany! :goodvibes bleeps gave you some really good recipes for it. :thumbsup2 In my experience you will need to esperiment a bit with the amount of sugar, different wines need more or less sugar. Also make sure not to boil the Glühwein, it will lose the alcohol!

If you want to buy it ready made, a quality brand is Gerstacker Glühwein. It is sold at the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, one of the oldest and best known Christmas Markets in Germany. Oh, and by the way, it is in my hometown! :goodvibes

Hello Flossbolna! I was fortunate enough to spend Christmas 1984 in Germany and Austria (I traveled all over Europe for 3 months). I spent about a week in Nuremberg and quite honestly I still dream about the Christkindlesmarkt and all my wonderful experiences there (I spent Christmas Day itself in Salzburg). My favorite part of decorating for Christmas is carefully unwrapping the special ornaments I bought, and brewing up some Glühwein to bring back all those wonderful memories.

My hope is that I will someday be able to convince my family to go back to Nuremberg at Christmas time. You live in a magical place!!

Thanks for the lovely comment! :goodvibes I love Nuremberg during the Christmas season. The market is still loved by locals as well as by the many tourists it attracts. It is still a wonderful place to buy high quality Christmas ornaments and I buy something for my own tree every year! :santa:

It must have been a very special trip for you, but you would find a lot of things in Europa have changed since then. Actually the Christkindlesmarkt is under a bit of debate locally for it needing updating - not adding a more modern touch, but renovating the little huts and the light fixtures etc.

I guess this explains how you became such an expert on Glühwein! :goodvibes

I do hope that the city comes together to give the support that it takes to renovate the market stalls to keep them authentic but up-to-date. I imagine that the market is such a huge draw for the tourist trade that people (even those who might otherwise not support the idea) would want to make the investment for the sake of the city.

Are you serving roast goose, or perhaps pork, for Christmas?

We are able to find the exact one disney sells in several of our local liquor stores, if you don't see it, I bet they can order it for you and have it before Christmas.

We can usually get whatever we need within one/two days!

I think it is not so much a money question, but a debate of the direction any refurbishment should take. And some people really like the slightly cheesy looking 70's lights! :goodvibes The problem is that money wise it makes more sense to create more of a "party atmosphere", i.e. here in Berlin the largest Christmas market has caroussels, a ferris wheel etc. Christmas markets have started to become a bit more like beer festivals in winter. And Nuremberg doesn't want to go along those lines, but a lot of restaurants in town would love that because they expect to earn more money. And the last years definitely have shown some improvements, so things are getting better! :goodvibes

Neither goose nor pork in my family: this year we will have a turkey :scared1: Jut for the fun of it, very untraditional. The traditional Christmas meal in my family is beef rouladen. And sausages with potato salad on the evening of the 24th (which is Christmas for us really).
