So original plan in December was Anaheim for 14 nights, three nights in Las Vegas (travelling by bus from Anaheim). Day trips from Anaheim to San Diego Zoo, Legoland, Universal, LA Shopping, South Coast Plaza shopping.

Now with a friend currently in Hawaii and another who has just finished the Hawaii Disney Cruise, seeing all of the photos they have been posting makes me want to go back to Hawaii. It's somewhere I have been going since I was 5 and we have not been in about 3 years. We would do 3 nights at Aulani and 11 nights in Waikiki at any of those along the beachfront (Moana Surfrider (our usual), Royal Hawaiian, Outrigger Waikiki, Sheraton Waikiki, Outrigger Reef).

But now I'm thinking of Japan, flights are just over $200, so just over $400 return. Fly from GC to Tokyo, then do at least 4 nights at Tokyo DL, then some nights in Tokyo, but am even considering doing 10 nights at Tokyo DL (maybe the Sheraton or Hilton), then taking the train to Tokyo for day trips. It will be FREEZING, but we can handle it, we are used to Europe in December.

I have asked DS what he would prefer to do (he doesn't know we are going, I'm just talking to him about where we would go on our next OS trip, maybe next year). He said Hawaii, that's his favourite place.

Where should the Aussie travellers go? Surf, Snow or somewhere in between (anaheim)?

sun, surf, shop.

What else is there???

By a very close second....TDL!

after just spending 9 nights at aulani..i'd say Hawaii.....loved it:cloud9:

but really all 3 are great, so no duds there!:clown:

Thanks for the votes! Looks like I may have to cancel my Anaheim hotel booking and book Hawaii (and I can get ff point flights to hawaii :cool1: )

Oh I know! See Hawaii is good, been there so many times, no really new activity investigation required (except for Aulani) as we know what we love to do there (Shop, eat, Shop, swim, Shop, eat some more, a luau, shop, eat, shop, another swim, float on a li-lo in the ocean on waikiki beach, maybe some shopping and lunch)

I did the poll just for you Karen! I know we share a love of polls :rotfl: Yes, would love to spend some time at Aulani :scratchin

Japan - something different:thumbsup2

Yes, see somewhere different would be nice, somewhere I've never been. But it's funny, I haven't been somewhere new in a very long time and I've been doing Japan investigation and there is so much to do and see and I'm having trouble working out which would be the best area in Tokyo to stay in. :scratchin But I would really love to go to Japan and with the cheap flights, golly! :surfweb:

I'd love to go to Japan too...but there are just so many places I want to go see that I'm having a hard time narrowing it down.

As you're going in ski season, I'd be tempted to go to Niseko as well. Then the trip would blow out to 3 - 4 weeks.

If you want something different, why not stay in the Disney area and travel into the Tokyo?

if you can work it, see that you get a resi for the character breakfast at aulani, a lot of fun, and tell them you are having your anniversary, they do a little ceremony..its on sat & sunday i think, you can book online.

Best character meal we have been to including the ones at WDW.

the photos are $30, so get a few good ones on your own camera when you meet mickey at the beginning.

we really enjoyed it, and the food was great & healthy, I'm lactose intolerant so the chef cooked me special banana pancakes using soy...best i have ever had:cloud9:

Get the cheapest room {standard views} ,as you wont spend long in the room so wont miss the ocean views.
We only got the pool view as it was the only one available for the length of stay we needed.

Buy the mugs, even for a few days..you can refill them by the pool...they have blue powerade..the DH was very happy re that. Hot drinks etc are in the store near reception.

When you eat by the pool, order kids meals, they are huge and half the price...

I think all options are great but I would  to hear more about TDL so that's my vote :)

There are just SO many places to visit. I was thinking of HK (thanks to your TR), it's been a few years since I've been there and DS hasn't been, but my Peanut allergy is SO bad now that eating there would make me very nervous as I know Peanut Oil is widely used there. I get nervous with the allergy when travelling with DS on my own, is something happened to me, there isn't really anyone to mind him until I got better, so in recent years I've stuck to travelling to countries that are allergy aware :worried: . I would LOVE to go back to Hong Kong.

Yes I did think of just staying the whole time near Disney (at the Sheraton or Hilton) and doing day trips into Tokyo. With it being just DS and myself I can get nervous in unfamiliar territory, so like to be somewhere safe and Japan is so unfamiliar to me. I'm fine taking trains etc and you get to know places your've travelled, where is good to go, where to avoid and I just don't know Japan. So staying around Disney, I know it's a safe area, then travel into Tokyo during the day would be good. Although if Japan is anything like Europe, in the winter, days are very short, sun up around 8-9am, goes down around 4pm (even 3.30pm sometimes).

AWESOME info, thank you!!!!

Character meal will definately be on the agenda. I am addicted to character meals! Infact at WDW & DL, we almost have them every day of our visit!

Great tip about the kids meals at the pool too!

Will be writing down all of that info, if Hawaii ends up being the choice. Well we will be going back there soon anyway, if not this December, then maybe next year sometime.

Ok so I just read the peanut allergy bit and changed my mind I never would of thought of things being cooked in peanut oil I have so much to learn :confused3 so I'm changing my vote by the way can you not go to Hawaii and DL in the same trip?

Tokyo is ok :thumbsup2 Japanese don't generally cook with Peanut Oil or widely use peanuts, so I'm not worried about the allergy there :cool1:

It's just Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia that are a problem with the use of oil.

:rotfl2: I must of missed the Hong Kong bit so my vote stays for Tokyo DL :rotfl:

I say go to Japan. How wonderful for you and your son to explore a new place together. But yeah, Hawaii wouldn't suck too much either :rotfl2:

Yes. That is a problem with Hong Kong. Even if you asked for no peanut oil, you always have the cross contamination issue. Plus you would have seen the packet or plate of peanuts on every table porn I've posted so far! :(

Yes, I did notice them, there was one real close up, I think at the banquet place you went to after visiting the Jumbo restaurant, they made me shudder, however you did give a peanut allegy warning so I knew not to lick the screen! :rotfl:

My nephew has a peanut allergy too. I was cringing every time I saw the peanuts.

It does come down to hot or cold :thumbsup2.
