Need help chosing a new car...

I was "informed" today that we are buying me a new car in the very near future *gasp*. I thought I was still about 2 years away from this move...apparently not. I've driven a Camry for years and loved it.

However, we are most likely going with a Hyundai. We are going to look at the Sonatas and Elantras. DH's best friend just bought a 2010 Elantra for under 16,000 out the door. W/o a trade-in. I won't be trading either--I'll be passing mine on That's what I'm after. :) I work at home and don't drive much.

seriously my husband LOVES his 2011 Hyundai Sonata--and people stop him all the time and tell him what a great looking car he has!

Another vote for Chevy Impala. Bought mine brand new 2003 I put over 130k miles on it with no problems, no major repairs just regular maintance, oil changes etc. Now 18 yr old grandson is driving my Impala to go to college. We bought a 2011 Chevy Traverse last Sept  it.

I've never heard of a tailgate problem with Subaru. What year and what vehicle?

We have 2 - Forester (03) and WRX STI (08). Good friend has an Outback wagon (07). Neighbors have an Impreza (?? 99, 00?). None of us have had issues with any of our cars. Subaru gets excellent ratings from government crash tests and consumer reports.

2005 Forresters. Both had 70,000 miles Wasn't just the tailgate hinge, it was the driver's door hinges too. But again, this was fleet service. We do have this issue with our Explorers too, but usually not until they hit 250,000 miles.

Wow. That really sucks, cause I just love my forester.

For the past couple of years I think ... hm, my car is getting old, maybe I should replace it ... and then I just give it a good cleaning and realize I don't need to. She's over 8 years old now with 157K miles and going strong. Hubby keeps saying we should go look at another and I just don't feel the need.

Plus not having that car payment is nice. We paid his off early and have not had any car payments. That extra $$ comes in handy!

Yeah, I'd never consider getting rid of a car after only 8 years (like I posted earlier). To me the best years of ownership are when they are 10 to 15 years old and running good.
I come by it naturally, my mom had her previous car for 27 years, and was disappointed it needed a new engine! And it was a Pinto!

I always look at fleets to see which cars they buy, because most fleet operators are looking for cars that have the lowest cost per mile. As for the Subaru, we got burned twice those. Subaru really isn't geared to fleet sales (read that as, giving a discount if you buy more than one). So not only didn't they last as long as the Explorers, they cost more too!
