Need help choosing a new fridge!!!

Grrrrrr it looks like we may be in the market for a new refrigerator soon. We wanted to do some research before we are "forced" to buy one quickly. Our current one is a Kenmore, it's a19 years old 24 cu. ft. side by side, with the ice and water in the door. We want equivalent to this one. It doesn't have to be fancy but water and ice is a must. Thing is I now have almond color. I'm not crazy about black and I'm a little afraid of the stainless. How difficult is it to keep the stainless clean and scratch free? We have a 14 month old granddaughter who visits but no children living here, but DH can be on the careless side and it drives me nuts! Am I worrying for nothing? Right now the panel on the front of the dishwasher is black but that can be changed. The stove is almond with black flat top and black window on the door. The stove will also be replaced soon.

I have had such good luck with the Kenmore, it has never had a problem all this time. I've been reading some reviews and it seems that some of these refrigerators are breaking pretty quickly, I would hate to make the wrong decision. I've really appreciated reading the posts with your experiences and would appreciate any more input or model numbers you might be willing to share.

Thanks a bunch!
JoAnn

Had this review from Consumer reports, I have a top bottom from the company now for 17 years without any problems, except plastic drawers are beaten. I want the econo saving. I may not even run the water.

Just looking for Bisque or Black.

I cannot live without my ice maker and cold filtered water! Definitely worth it!

I agree!! I fill up my 24 oz water bottle 4+ times a day with the water in the door. My husband uses it at least 2 times a day with ice, too. You can actually lose weight by drinking cold water since it makes your body rev up your metabolism. So having the water already cold from the fridge is good for your body.

We have a GE and always have. We bought our current one to replace the small one that came with our house. It is now just under 4 years old and doing great. I love the fridge and won't buy any other brand!

I just bought my 2nd side by side with filtered water and ice through the door.
After doing extensive research on Consumer Reports and other feedback sites, and talking to a friend who's husband is an appliance repairman, I came to the conclusion, that it doesn't matter what brand. My friend (and Consumer Reports pretty much backs this up) said refrigerators these days are going to last on average 7 years whether it's a $2000 one or a $500 one. My super KMart has a Sears Appliance outlet in the side, and I got a Whirlpool black side by side with the filtered water and ice through the door, and a small scratch on the side that is against my stove, for under $600 there. They had tons to choose from, from freezer on top, side by side, French with freezer on bottom, black, white, stainless etc., and fantastic prices on all. See if your KMart has anything like this.

We purchased a Samsung french door/freezer on bottom the day after Thanksgiving and WE LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! It has ice/water in door. It is Platinum in color which resembles stainless steel. It is magnetic and more scratch resistent. It is also very easy to keep clean. It has been 6 months and I still walk in my kitchen and say "I love my new fridge"...I know...wierrd!!:rotfl2:

I have a black stove with stainless accent (handles) & black diswasher. I dont like the shiny black refrigs. I have one now and it scratches to easy. Would it be wierd to have a stainless or metalic refrig?

We are shopping :( been making myself crazy comparing prices online. We realize we need to get a "counter depth" style, which means the prices are higher for the same cu. ft. grrrrrrr nothing can be easy Jim is going to go take a look this afternoon while I'm at a bridal shower then we'll go back together. We also may replace our range too since the oven is very off and it is over 20 years old. Wish me luck and keep the suggestions coming.

Some are a scam, I know that Sears is one of the only retailers that still has a TRUE same as cash offer. No payments, no interest. Most 0% offers require minimum monthly payments.
Effective Feb 2010, retailer cannot offer a "no payment" plan. You can get no interest but you will have to make monthly payments.

We just got a side by side black Samsung fridge from Best Buy yesterday. It was back-ordered, so we will not get it till May 26. We didn't get the extended service plan, but now we are wondering if we should. It has the water/ice on the door. The fridge we have now is so old (it was here when we moved in). So we never had experience with the water/icemaker.

Do you recommend the warranty? It is $150 for 3 years or $250 for 5.
Samsung in the past had problems with their compressors. I would get the protection plan. If you are purchasing from Best Buy, they have the best protection plan (Geek Squad Black Tie) since after the 4th repair the product will be replaced where other retailers will just continue to band aid it. And it doesn't have to be the same issue 4 times either unlike other retailers. Also theirs starts from the date of purchased as opposed to Lowes or Home Depot that just extends the manufacture warranty and what limited things that covers.

Almond, now known as bisque is in limited supply, usually special order (think 3-5 weeks for delivery), more expensive and really limits what you can get. It is being phased out by most manufacturers. If you need a special size, you will have a hard time finding it in bisque.

Keep in mind, that Kenmore is just a name not a manufacturer. So you don't know what you are really getting. It could be Frigidaire, GE, LG, Samsung or Whirlpool just to name a few. So make sure to shop around an compare feature to feature, regardless of the brand.

Can you tell that for the past 5 1/2 years I sold appliances? PM me if you have questions.

WOW thanks for all the great advice and suggestions. We ended up in Best Buy they have the deal that you get a 20% discount if you buy 4 appliances. We found happened to find a side by side by Whirlpool with the right depth for us, for $1099, $879 after the 20% We ended up with the stainless steel. We replaced our old range also. Our old (24 years) dishwasher works fine but we did replace that and our over the range microwave. (the Mic is only 2 years old but it was a $199 special so we're giving it to our daughter or will sell it on craigs list) All in all, I'm happy! 4 new appliances for $2001. plus tax. Plus I will have the NYS energy rebate for the refrigerator of $105. Best Buy also is offering 18 months no interest, so I'm working with their money not mine :) It'll be paid off long before then.

About the bisque, I pretty much figured it wouldn't be around for long. Hubby tried to talk me into black but I just couldn't see it in our kitchen, it's too small. When he looked at it in the store, he agreed with me. I just need to find a really good stainless cleaner. I think I remember reading someplace that Pledge makes a good one. Has anyone tried it?

BTW at Best Buy if it goes on sale within 30 days all you have to do is go back and they'll refund the difference :)

How about a stainless with black trim but I do think a plain stainless would be fine. That would blend it all together.

Good luck! Best Buy was great for us.
