Need help a WDW Gal planning first trip to DL

Hi all, I'm a FL gal know knows a good bit about WDW...I have an itch in my britches to follow a dream and take my adult son to DL for the first time. I know nothing about CA or much about DL so any and all advice is welcome. I know I want to stay on property probably at the Disneyland Hotel, I will probably stay out there a week or so with a couple of days sightseeing. I think I want to go in October of 2015 so we can see the changing of Haunted Mansion. Looking forward to all of ya'lls advice! Thanks!

First stop for any WDW vet is Hydroguys' comprehensive DLR Guide for WDW Vets. Read it (it's long), read it again, and then come back with questions that you wouldn't have known to ask without Hydroguy's excellent tome.

How wonderful that you will be visiting Disneyland for the first time! HydroGuy's thread is a great tool to get WDW vets ready for DLR!

You'll be at Disneyland during the Halloween Time season if your October plan stays on course, so please feel free to join us in or skim the first page of the Halloween Time at DLR Superthread. While I am still filling in some info in a few of the posts on page 1 of that thread, there is already a lot of info there, which will give you a sense of what else is going on at DLR in addition to Haunted Mansion Holiday, which other events are taking place in October that could affect crowds at DLR, what Mickey's Halloween Party entails, alternate ideas of Halloween-ish things to do while in Southern California, etc.
