Need Help - 24 shirts have peeled spots after vinegar wash.

Friday, I used a heat press to make 24 shirts. I followed the instructions on the package.

Today, Monday, I am washing them in the machine with the vinegar wash and they have design mising. Like it looks like they have been washed a hundred times.....They are rinsing now or I would take pics. Also, on the Star Wars weekend ones....mainly black Mickey Head printedon white shirts, the black ink ran onto different areas of the shirt.

I used HP ink, 74Xl and 75XL cartridges. THe transfers I used were from pirntonit.com. That is where I got my heat press from. The shirts were a poly/cotton blend. Prewash done as suggested.

Now, after reading and rereading the board, the only thing I can think of that is differnet how I see things on the board vs the instructions that came with the transfers....on the board it says let your printed designs sit for 24 hours before applying....could this be it?


Any other thoughts?

So, on the other shirts I have not washed them......They are now packed for the trip. I will take my changes on running at Disney. I just need them for one day.

I just placed an order for 100% cotton beefy Ts from jiffyshirts. They should be here Thursday but with the holiday it could be Monday.

Is there any harm to printing more transferes today and lettign them sit until Friday or Saturday?

ugh! I am so sorry to hear of your problem! Personally, I made over 60 shirts - used a vinegar wash for each and every one of them and never had any fade or run. What a bummer. I did not use a heat press, I used an iron. I used 80% HP transfers and 20% Avery transfers. One Avery transfer cracked in the dryer but that was the extent of damage for mine. 95% of my tees were 100% cotton; the other 5% were a 50/50 blend. I didn't have any problems with either combo.

Wondering if you used light or dark transfers? I read on these boards that some folks felt the light transfers faded quickly so I stayed away from the light ones as much as possible.

I wonder if it was the "sit time" for the transfer to absorb the ink as you pondered yourself.

What quality setting was your printer set? My HP instructions wanted me to use "best" which means a lot more ink sprays out than on "normal" setting.

I've read where some folks scotchgarded their shirts (both inside & out). I didn't do that to any of mine. The only problem I had at Disney was the guy who decided to spill Purell down the front of his shirt!

Some of my transfers sat for 24 hours and some sat for a week before I got around to ironing them on. It worked for me.

I think I may have found my problem. But I had to wash.....SOme of the ones I did last week, I heat pressed again with a little hotter heat and 2 more seconds. they actually look better and appears more ink "set" in. But as I said, I have not washed.

When I starting using my heat press last Friday, it wasn't quite right so they are sending me a new one. I'll see if there is a differnece when the new one gets here.

I have tried to place a new transfer over a couple of the boogered up tees .... it is okay for messing around the yard.

I am pretty tickled with things so far.

ah yes, the not enough heat/heat not on long enough problem. Here's a pix of that problem on a tee I was preparing:

I just added more iron time to the tee and the gray areas of black came out great! (See results below)

funny, that was my initial thought when I read your post but then I thought if you had a heat press, it MUST be hot enough!

good luck with the next ones. I also use 50/50 shirts and have never used a vinegar wash. I wash & dry with no soap or fabric softener beforehand. They don't get washed again until after our trip. Light and dark transfers both come out okay....actually I like the light when possivle. It doesn't end up as stiff.
