Need guidance on purchasing DVC

My husband and I are both young and want to buy into DVC, but we can't do the full 150 SSR price at the moment.

So we were thinking about a small resale number, say around 60 pts or so, to start out and then build up our points yearly if we can.

?'s I have: How do I know how long I will have left on a DVC membership if I buy a resale? Like, how many more years I will get to use it?

Also, are there an amount of points that would be a better option for banking and borrowing to allow us to go to WDW every other year or so (we are teachers so would have to go during summer or breaks)? The room size wouldn't matter too much but we'd obviously like a 1 bd if we had the points?

Thanks for the help! I'm a little new at this and want to get the best deal possible.

Nothing wrong with that. Just remember that you need to add-on points in increments of 25 or more. If you want to finance through DVC, it has to be 50 or more.

Also, when you buy a resale you must pay cash or finance it yourself (home equity or other bank loan.)

The contract end dates are fixed. All of the resorts EXCEPT Saratoga Springs end on January 31, 2042. SSR ends on January 31, 2054. When you purchase has no bearing on the ending date. For example if you buy points now at SSR, you get about 49 years of ownership. If you wait 10 years to buy, you only get 39 years of ownership.

Go WAAAAAY up to the top of this page and look for the link that says "DVC Point Charts." Those charts show the number of points required to stay a night throughout the year. They are pretty much guaranteed to stay the same every year, except for the Spring Break week and Thanksgiving which move annually.

The points vary by resort, room size, season and even day of the week. I'd suggest starting with the point charts for Old Key West. That was the first resort and has the lowest per-night point costs. (DVC got "smart" and raise the points at resorts subsequent to OKW.) OKW is also a resort at which you are likely to find a 60pt resale, and has the lowest annual dues in the program.

SSR has the second-lowest dues, contracts that run 12 years longer than the others, and DVC will finance the purchase for you. But you'll have to commit to buying at least 150 points. Remember the last thing you want to do is strain your budget for a timeshare.

Well, let's see.
In our situation, we usually go in Oct. or early Dec. and stay in a Sudio for 5 nites (sun - Thurs - the cheapest).
Those 5 nites are 40 pts at OKW up to 55 at SSR or 60pts at BCV or VWL.
We are closing on a 30 point SSR, which will allow us to continue our trips every other year... but I'm sure we will buy more points.

In your case....
A 1br during the summer for 5 nites (Sun - Thurs) ranges from 100 to 110 at OKW, 125 to 135 at SSR, on up to 140 to 150 at BCV, depending on the particular summer weeks.

So, yes... you could stay in a 1br at OKW every other year for 55 points.
But 75 points would guarantee a stay in a 1br at ANY resort every other year.
OR, just 50 points will allow the same stay at any resort every three years.

Like everybody says, buy where you want to stay.

We chose SSR for three reasons.
It became available
We typically go to DTD every nite, so we like the location
There extra 12 years and low dues do make the cost lower allowing for time, IMO.

The Timeshare Store, the sponsor of this forum, has several small points contracts now.... and seem to get more all the time.

We got our 30pt SSR thru them.
Just this week, they listed and sold a 60 point and a 70 point OKW.
And recently a 50 BWV, and a 70 point or so VWL.
Just contact one of the reps (we are dealing with Jerry), tell 'em what you are looking for, and check back with them now and again. Many times a listing will show up and they start calling folks before the listing is posted on the web site.

Another plus of resale is that once you get your small contract and are "in the system", you can add-on directly thru DVD.... bypassing the 150 point minimum.

My family currently owns 50 points at VBR which we chose to use at OKW in October for 3 nights in a 2b and 2 nights at VB ,which was cancelled due to the hurricanes. I'm glad to see there are more people who, like us can only afford a small package! I'm thrilled with ours and would love to add on in the future provided we can afford to!! We also used the tss they are very knowledgable and helpful!! I tell my DH that it is an investment in my mental health instead of a Psychiatrist I see Disney!!! Good Luck!! :earboy2:
