Crunch time. I thought I was done, but the Matchbox Pirate Ship I got from Amazon yesterday is a little young for my 7 year old nephew. Plus, it came in frustration free packaging, which means all the pieces thrown in a box (I can already hear dsil's side remarks). So I need a toy (not a video game) appropriate for a 7 year old boy, that is $10-$20 (they're getting a big family gift, just want him to be able to open something). The pirate ship will sit in a closet for 2-3 years until ds is 'of age'. TIA!

What about a yahtzee game? Actually there are a lot of games out there right now with reduced prices. Last night we were buying gifts for a 7 year old boy from the local angel tree and my daughter mentioned that the boys in her class love to play checkers. Kerplunk was another game we looked at too. We ended up buying a yahtzee game and a game with monkeys that is similar to kerplunk. Both were priced at $6.

Anything remote control that you can find in your price range. Look at places like Walgreen's that often have an off brand, or in a sporting goods store. We have Academy in Texas and they often have some inexpensive RC options. Target has a brand they carry too.

My ds7 is into Bakugan/Pokemon, Star Wars, and GI Joe - plus the video games you said you'd rather avoid. And - as most kids that age, boys or girls - he loves Lego. Hope this helps.

Yup, that's my 7 yo too - minus the pokemon which I hate so they don't get to have it. He also likes dress up and transformers oh and spy gear. He and his brother were absolutely drooling over the spy gear laser trip wires they got for a friends birthday present the other day - that was $20 - they have some other cool stuff for less - Border's carries this stuff and you can use a 30% off coupon on it. I also just picked up a really cool GI Joe Snake Eye's Dress Up set yesterday at Target for $20. It was a mask, sword and a few other accessories.

Good idea, didn't think of a game.

We did remote control truck last year.

I didn't want to do video games, because he already has soooo many, and I wouldn't know what to get.

Thanks everyone!

I would find a smaller Lego set. The new Toy Story army men set was $12.99 at Toys R Us. They also have several Lego City, Star Wars and Space Police sets under $20.

Snap Circuits Jr set

Guinness Book of World Records book

Anything Bakugan/Pokemon

Hyper Dash or Hyper Jump

Star Wars Figures

My 8 yo son's big item on his list to Santa was a Nano Hexbug, the little ones not the big ones. I bought it directly thru the hexbug website. My friend's son wanted the bigger hexbug. On a side note, my son screams like a girl when he sees a bug but thinks these are cool - go figure.

Legos (Aldi has some smaller sets for under $20), Nerf Guns (The CS-6 is under $20) or a Marshmallow Shooter (generally under $20).

My twin will be 7 next month. All they want is Lego's and Bakugans! Easy chapter books like Magic Treehouse are good, too. As a mom, I have to say anything that doesn't require batteries! (Although, if his parents have annoyed you lately, get something really loud!! :rotfl:)

I bought that pirate ship for my sons, and thought it was too young, too. It went to the Marines toy drive box last night at scouts. I felt bad about the packaging, though! I hate all those ties on the toys, but that doesn't make for a nice presentation.

I'd be inclined to go with something like a Lego. Or how about something like Bendaroos, Dotza markers, K'nex, or those Magnet building things (sorry, can't remember the name of them...there are stick like pieces and magnetic balls).

I got the boxed set. Thanks again everyone. He has so many toys and video games, every child could use a good book. I did have some Bakugan stuff in my amazon cart, but it was getting too expensive. I'm sure he has it anyway.
