I use to get my grandma all occasion cards stationary and a few books of stamps That way she could send out her cards and notes all year long

** OT ** not to highjack the thread but...
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this idea & would like to do it for my grandma! What did you choose for cards - prepackaged or separate? Blank or ones with simple quotes inside??? Help me pull this one off please?

What about a memory quilt or pillow? I think Things Remembered can do them for you.

I would buy the pre packaged box of all occasion cards. The box would have b-day Anniversary ect card in it. I would also make up a calendar with the important dates on it as sometimes she would forget things. You could also do up some computer labels with everyone's address or just an address book and then do up some return address for her Also a nice pen in the package would be nice also. Boy I miss my Grandma but is sure was nice to think of her today . Thanks Brenda

My granny is 80 and has bad very bad arthiritis in her hands but still loves to walk around her little block so I bought her some new walking shoes with velcro instead of shoe strings.

My inlaw grandparents are getting a floral arrangement centerpiece as they also do not need anything.

Does she need anything? New coat or sweats or a gown/housecoat/slippers?
A heated blanket or mattress pad? How old are her towels and washcloths or kitchen towels and dishcloths or even her bed sheets? I know that my granny won't spend for new stuff like that and we "splurge" to have her some new nice comfy stuff like that.

Can she see okay? I saw BIG BIG button things at walgreens the other day including a remote control, calculator, electric wall clock, and thermomter. I almost bought the remote because it was so big it would almost be impossible to loose, lol.

not sure what your price point is...

digital picture frame pre-loaded with pictures. That's what grandma is getting this year. We spent $70. It's awesome.

a nice family photo in a frame if the above is too expensive.

big box of easy to chew chocolates.

slippers.

warm throw blanket.

make-up.

perfume.

a 'certificate' saying you'll take her to lunch to her favorite place or shopping or to get a manicure or a haircut...etc.

or you give her a manicure...i used to go to my grandma's and give her a manicure. she loved it. she loved being pampered and having time with me.

Oh and whoever posted about the meals and eating with their step-dad, I love that. Older people really want to have time with us.

These are all very thoughtful, great ideas!! :thumbsup2

I'd suggest practical gifts since my Grandma preferred them the most. Maybe it's true for most everyone in that generation?

I always got my grandma a fruit basket, chocolates or canned nuts. She also liked bulk packages of paper towels, toilet paper and trash bags. Just everyday essentials that always run out.

Gift certificates for home services are good; plumber, painters, yard work, handyman services of all types. Beauty shop coupons are wonderful for older ladies; many of them still like to have standing appointments.

For a special relative that you don't mind spending for: basic cable or satellite TV service. Many seniors on fixed incomes can't afford it, but would love to be able to watch things like the History Channel or TCM. My MIL is always wishing she could find this or that 50-yo movie to watch again. (NetFlix could make a mint off of older people if they had a paper catalog, but alas, they don't.)
