Hello to all!

We need a nice campground close as possible to downtown Atlanta. We are leaving our house on Sept 30th for Fort Wilderness. Well that will be it! Our house will be sold on Oct 5th and when we get back from the fort on Oct 14th we are heading to Atlanta! My husband got a new position with the govt in Atlanta. We will be in temporary quarters until we find a new home. We do have the option of staying in our RV. I found a KOA that is North of Atlanta and it looks like it is about 40 miles from Atlanta. Are there any other campground that anyone could recommend that our fairly close to A? We have to let the agency know by Sept 29th if we are staying in our RV or a hotel.

Thanks so much for your time!!

Take a look at Stone Mountain state park. You might even do a search on this forum- I think there were some old posts here.
I have stayed in the hotels during a trade show ( we drove into downtown each day - its a little bit of a commute - but in Atlanta - everything is... )
We have to work this trade show every two years - so we will be interested to see if anyone else has any ideas.

Hi,

I live about 45 min south of Atlanta. We liked Stone Mountain too. It is very close to downtown. The sites are alittle close but we had no problem. We were in a pop-up at the time. There is a neat village there to explore and a laser show at night. Plus the huge granite rock to climb.
Good Luck and welcome to the South. Hope you like heat and humidity.

In Atlanta verything is at least 30 minutes away, no matter where you are. You will be surprised how many peple drive at least 20 to 50 miles one way to wrk each day here. I drive 52 miles to Atlanta from Gainesville every work day. Stone Mountain is very nice and there are activites there for everyone. Also th laser show still goes on during the weekends through October. :sunny: Here is the web site. http://www.stonemountainpark.com/

Welcome to your new home from a native atlantan, there are only a few of us here.

Another vote for Stone Mountain. You won't be disappointed !

Another vote for Stone Mountain! Sorta native....lived here for 35 years!

You might also look at the camp grounds at Lake Lanier....NE of Atlanta.

There really aren't many campgrounds that are truly convenient to downtown Atlanta. What part of town will your DH be working in? I would strongly suggest you look for your future home on that same side of town. Atlanta traffic is really terrible.

If you are planning to live on the west side of town, consider Red Top Mountain State Park. It is gorgeous, clean, and quiet, located almost between Acworth and Cartersville. Most convenient to Marietta and Kennesaw. Be aware that October can be pretty cool in North Georgia. We get our first frost sometime in October, but not a hard freeze .:cold: Usually. Hope you have a heater.

Thanks alot to everyone's suggestions! We need them! I am from Dallas and my husband is from San Antonio. We would like to buy a home west of Atlanta so we can go home to TX a little easier! But, the campground does not need to be west because it will only be temporary until we find a house and we can move in. I love the ideas already and I am going to check Stone Mountain out! We live in Spotsylvania VA right now and we have been commuting to DC for the last 5 years. When we first moved here it took usually no more than an hour to get home but now it is at least 1 hour and 45 minutes. And, this is riding in a commuter van w/ 12 other people....not something we want to do for the next 20 years. So, I am excited about Atlanta but I do realize that they have traffic too. Hopefully my husband will be able to stagger his hours and not hit the peak times! I am a part time gov't worker and I will work out of the home only when we get to GA. This is a very crazy time for us! Tomorrow is our very last full day in our home and we leave for WDW Friday morning!

Thanks again and keep the GA suggestions coming!

Carrie,

As another who transferred from DC to ATL I would just say think twice about buying west of the city. While it is a beautiful area and a quick get away to TX, most of the camping around Atlanta is to the north up 75, 575 or 85.

What you may gain on a quick get away to TX a few times a year you will loose trying to get in a quick weekend camping trip.

Beautiful state parks and corps campgrounds abound north of Atlanta. There are very few to the west.

We live north of Atlanta on Lake Lanier and there are many beautiful camping spots on the lake. Unfortunately, I think the Corps campgrounds have a limit on how long you can camp within a 30 day period (14 days maybe?). They are beautiful though and most site are on the water. Here's a link with info: Corps Camping

What everyone is saying about the traffic is so true! I commute to the Kennesaw area every day and what should be about a 50 min. drive takes me about 1.5 hours. Only time I see it slow down is on Sunday AM.

Good luck with the move and welcome to GA!
