ok guys. I am looking to take the plunge and buy a new DSLR.

I want something that can take good all around pictures. I would really like to get some good night shots as I am not happy with my point in shoot.

So what models do you suggest and why? Best all around for a good price would be nice.

Thanks for any help.

Well, they can all do what you want. The differences are mainly the "feel", available lenses and accessories, and then price. It might help to narrow down how much you plan on spending so that you can then see what each brand offers in that range.

I have had several small point and shoots but would like to surprise her with an entry level slr. Can't wait to hear everyones advice. Which is the best entry level?

Well, that is the kicker. There is no true best entry level. There is no true best top of the pack either for that matter. It unfortunately has to be a personal decision. I suggest reading as many reviews as possible and also handling them. If it is going to be a surprise gift, then that is going to be a real tough one. The "feel" can vary drastically from brand to brand. Just an example from my experience. I was going to buy a Rebel XT, but then held it compared to a Nikon D50 and instantly changed my mind. I then held a Pentax K100D and thought the feel was very comparable and it had more for the money, so that is what I went with. If you want the present to be the best, you might try to get her to handle them some before buying.

I just recently got a Pentax K10D before that I had two easy shares I love my Pentax in fact my avatar picture was just recently taken with it. I read all the reviews in Digital Photography buyers guide. I went to local camera stores and held them all and even snapped some shots. I fell in love with my camera and based on customer reviews on line and my own experiences I had to get it, it was well worth the money and I have had great pictures since using it.

Hope this helps

I do not think I have seen you around here before, so welcome Candlepin_Man. The more Pentax DSLR users around here the better.

Thanks I've only been a member for a short while, but I really enjoy the topics on this board. I can't agree more about Pentax users, we're a rare breed.

I think there are like 6 or 7 of us here definatly the underdogs. Back to the question almost any SLR will give you better low light abilities simply because you will be able to by a lens that will allow you to get down to an f-stop value anywhere from 1.2 up to 2.8 which you will not be able to do with a P&S. You will also need a tripod to get the really long exposure shots for nights, just got one myself but havent had the chance to play with it but all the great night shots you see on the forums almost all of them are taken with a tripod. I suggest you go out and feel the cameras dont take our words for it buy the one that feels best in your hands and offers you the best options

I've noticed a lot of good deals (due to new cameras being introduced in their respective lines) with the Nikon D80, Canon 30D, and Canon 40D.

All would be good cameras, but since they are "dated" models to an extent, their newer replacements will have certain advantages.

I've seen a pretty good deal at Adorama on the Canon Xsi. You get the camera body, the kit lens, and a 75-300 lens for around $749.

I just upgraded from the Nikon D70 to the D90. In fact, I picked it up today. I can't wait to give it a try. It is a bit pricey, about 1,200, but it is supposed to take photos at very high ISO. I really think you can't go wrong with the Nikon family. They take good photos and are quite easy to use.
