Hi, I dont have a paypal account, I'm renting from an owner direct.
They give an option of paying through VRBO/Homeaway or Paypal direct.

What is the safer way? I'm not sure if I'd need a paypal account.
Is it ok to pay right on the VRBO/Homeaway site?

Thanks (from a newbie!)

Although I'm not sure what the safest way would be, you can create a Paypal account with just a credit card.

Paypal is safe. To me, it's easier (and safer) than entering a credit card every time you want to buy something. I've used it for years, although not with renting condos.

You don't have to have a PayPal account. Owner will send you an invoice and you can use your credit card. I've never used the vrbo or homeaway site to pay.

If you open a paypal account, just use a credit card. Dont link your bank account.

Have used paypal a lot and not had any troubles until recently...they really screwed up when I was trying to use my bank account. (Long story, but I will end up paying fees on my cc when I planned ahead to avoid that.) You will pay additional fees to use PP, so you may want to sort that out. But it seems that the owners transfer the cost of the transaction to renters anyway, as they are generally "small businesses" (i.e., tiny!), so it's pretty much a cost of dealing with owners directly. (Which is not a big deal, overall, and wouldn't stop me.)

Exchange rates may be an issue too, but that's the case no matter how you pay.

I would think going through VRBO would give you some recourse if something goes wrong. Haven't done it myself, but I did see the ads for that option when I was using VRBO.

HTH--and hope i just didn't confuse the matter!! :)

Thanks I paid through VRBO and got an email confirmation right away...exciting. lol
