Need Advice On Wisdom Teeth Removal

Should I go with the regular dentist or the oral surgeon?

  • Let the dentist do it. It's cheaper and there's less recovery time.

  • Go to the oral surgeon. You can sleep through the whole thing.

I need to have my wisdom teeth removed. I have had one removed so there are 3 left. The one on the top is fully exposed but the two on bottom are partially covered by my gums (impacted).

Here's the question: My dentist says he can pull them in his office or I can go to an oral surgeon. I'm not sure what to do.

Any advice?

I'd go with the oral surgeon. It's probably more expensive but with having two impacted I'd want an oral surgeon.

Go to an oral surgeon... if anything goes amiss, he/she will be more well equipped to handle it than a regular dentist.

(I had my widom teeth removed years ago by an oral surgeon... a couple of them had to be drilled out in pieces. I was soooo happy I was asleep for that!)

I had all four removed at once... I was asleep the whole time...no other way to do it!!

I had 4 that handn't came in yet. All four had to be busted into small pieces and removed since they were so impacted. I slept like a baby and felt no pain, until the next day that was a different story. Thank you for percocet!

Go with the oral surgeon for sure!!

Why do you need to be alseep with the oral surgeon? I just had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out with the oral surgeon and only had local anesthesia. They offered me general but I don't like to be put to sleep if I can help it. I say, ask the oral surgeon what kinds of anesthesia they offer, and then decide.

My DH had his out last year at age 40.

GO TO AN ORAL SURGEON!!!!!!

There are things that can go wrong.

And yes, he got a bone infection in his jaw after the surgery. Like a month after.

The recovery can be tough for adults. We heal slower.

I worked for an oral surgeon many years ago. You would be surprise how many people had to come to him after the regular dentist messed up wisdom teeth extractions.

Surgeon. Their drugs are nice. :thumbsup2

I actually wasn't given a choice, I was referred to a surgeon by my dentist. I don't think he does them.

I had all exposed teeth and I still went to an oral surgeon to remove them (I didn't need them removed we chose to for various reasons). Medical covered more than dental would have anyway so they were essentially free. Dental would've covered about half the cost.

1000% oral surgeon.

They do that stuff everyday. They are more experienced AND you can sleep and not have to deal with that experience!!! From your viewpoint it takes about 5 minutes, what could be better than that??!

BTW, make sure you don't use a straw for several days after surgery! You don't want to end up with dry socket, trust me!!

Another vote for oral surgeon. It was expensive, but they put me out, took out all 4 teeth, and really- it wasn't so bad. (Not to say it was a walk in the park, but I had heard so many horror stories, I was scared beyond belief).

And I agree with the others- this is routine for them, less chance of something going wrong, more chance of them doing it correctly and well.

No question - oral surgeon. I will never use a regular dentist for anything major ever again after one put me in the hospital after a root canal ("It's cheaper to have me do it.") that got infected because he failed to drain it...

Oral surgeon. Start to finish, mine took less than 15 mins (had two out at a time, a couple of years apart).

An i.v., a woozy feeling, and next thing I knew I was looking at my watch and less than 20 mins had passed. Easy peasy. (And all of mine were below the surface)

count me in for Oral Surgeon. I had 2 impacted and 2 that had come through. They knocked me out and it was over in no time. No infection, no dry socket. Not a bad experience at all!

Absolutely oral surgeon. I had mine done about 6 months ago by an oral surgeon (2 were impacted, 2 were exposed) - took about 15 minutes. There's no way I would have gone to a regular dentist for a surgery like that.

Good luck! :) Make sure you stock up on plenty of pudding.

ETA: Just wanted to add that I did not experience any dry socket or infection and only needed the percocet for a couple of days.

I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed two yrs ago, I had three impacted and one exposed. My dentist didn't even give me choice he just gave me a list of oral surgeons he worked with. I think that is the way to go.
