I am in a similar situation and we leave for our WDW/Cruise vacation in 5 days. My Great Aunt, who is more like a mother to my father and a Grandmother to me, has sever cancer. This was only diagnosed a few weeks ago. Given her age, there is nothing they can do for her other then make her comfortable. Her 100 Birthday will be on Halloween, if she makes it to then. She is not expected to live two more weeks. We will be on our Magical vacation then.
When we scheduled this cruise early in 2002 I asked my father if it would be OK to book a cruise in which we would be gone during her birthday celebration. He told me that we should go ahead and book the vacation. We could come see her after the cruise, as she likes to get visitors and this would spread out her celebration.
Last weekend we made a special trip to see my Great Aunt. If by some miracle she is still living when I get back I will make another trip to see her as soon as we get back. I have a lot of guilt over going on this vacation but I have decided to go and will ask my father not to call me. Im not sure why I am writing this, but I decided to share, in case it would help you.
