I've learned about geocaching and it sounds like a hobby DH would really enjoy. I'm thinking about equipping him at Christmas. Can anyone advise on GPS equipment? I see a $100 Garmin Etrex GPS on Amazon. Would this work? Could I get something better without spending a lot more?

What else do you need besides the GPS unit? Do I need to budget for any accessories/supplies?

Does equipment and prices change rapidly? Should I wait until just before Christmas, in other words?

Thanks!!
Peggy

Warning... it's an addicting hobby! About the GPS unit, if all you're going to use it for is geocaching, the Etrex will work great. Really, that's all you need. If you want something that will give you road maps, etc, you'll probably want to get something a little bit more. I have the Etrex right now, but just ordered the Magellan Sportrak Pro. I found it online for $129.99. If it hasn't sold out, I highly recommend getting that one. It has a $30 rebate from Magellan, so it will cost the same as the Etrex, but it can download maps, etc.

You don't need any other equipment except for items to trade. If you don't have one already, you might want to get a decent backpack, but anything else you'll need you probably already have lying around the house. We take bus spray, water bottles, etc with us when we go out.

I have to run to a doctor's appt right now, but as soon as I get home I'll look up the link for the store I bought my Sportrak. You probably won't find another deal that good.

If you have any other questions, ask away! :)

Thank you. I would love to know the link you used to get such a great price. I can't find that unit for less than $200.

I'm sure I'll think of many more questions.

ME!!!!!

A few weeks ago I had no idea what the term geocaching meant. I read a post here on the DIS and was intriqued.

Now I own a Garmin eTrex Legend and DH and I went out and found 2 geocaches!
It was really fun and we discovered some new areas.

Extra batteries would make a good stocking stuffer!

Enjoy!
