Need a small bit of help here....

I am going down to my mom's this weekend to start sorting things, getting rid of things, etc. One of the things that I want to do is get some of her plants before we sell the house and this weekend will probably be the best time to do it. What I'm thinking of taking is one of the Peonies and some Lily of the Valley.

My question is this - if I dig these up now do I have to put them immediately into the ground at my house or can I put them in a pot until spring? Or can I go ahead and put them in an open spot I've got and then move them in the spring to where I want them to go????

I don't want to do anything that is going to kill them because that would hurt me very much. Thanks!!!

I suggest you plant them and then move them, but peonies don;t like to be moved so if you could find the perfect spot for it this fall, that's be better.

Absolutely move them. When we moved here 3 years ago I took lily of the valley and peonies, both moved easily. The lily of the valley is still in a pot. They're doing well. It was the heat of the summer and I just dug a shallow hole and stuck the peonies in. They did very well. You might miss a bloom next spring on the peonies but they will survive. My peonies have been passed around and divided in our family since the 1800's!

Sorry don't have much experience with Peonies.

Lily of the Valley are very durable, you can either pot them for now or plant them now. My recommendation would be pot them. Just make sure they have good shade, they do not like direct sun.

You can dig them up and put them in pots, but I wouldn't try wintering them over in the pots, especially if you live in a climate where the ground freezes.

Prepare an area in your yard where they can be put into the ground. You probably have a couple of months to do it.
