Ok here goes;
Brown some chicken / shrimp, put aside on a plate.
Fry up the veggies (bell peppers and onions are good, but I always sneak in broccoli and zucchini too), put aside on the plate.
In the frypan, stir up:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup water or stock or pineapple juice (it get sweeeet if you do this)
1/4 cup vinegar
big squirt of ketchup
spoonful or two of soy sauce or worcestershire sauce
a few grinds of pepper or a few drops of hot sauce
Bring the sauce up to a boil, then add back in the meat and vegetables. Add in diced pineapple at this time if you want.
then thicken it up with a cornstarch slurry (1 teas cornstarch mixed up with 4 or 5 spoonfuls of cold water). Don't use flour to thicken it or you won't get that "shiny" look. Get it all bubbling together nice and hot, serve spooned over rice.
And of course feel free to adjust the amount of vinegar to make it more or less sour.
Even typing up this recipe is making my teeth ache! This is one of DD's and DH's favorite winter dishes - hot and sweet and very filling.
