Anyone know of a poem that a young boy can read at his Great Grandma's funeral?

He's interested in a poem or prayer and I can't find anything fitting...

Thanks if you can help!

How about something he can write himself, or you can help him with.. from the heart. That's what my girls and my nephews (ages 4-7) did when my grandfather passed away. But we didn't have a funeral where people spoke, more like a memorial so what they wrote were framed and put up at the funeral home.

I'm sorry for your loss... it's hard on the kids.

He's 7... His sister is singing a song so he wants to participate too.

Thanks everyone!

It may sound like an odd suggestion, would you have time to go look at grandmother greeting cards? Some of the cards from a child might have a little poem that would be acceptable, maybe with a few modifications.

Another place to check for some ideas is a scrapbooking phrases sight. One I am familiar with is click here

One of the little things they had on that website was:
Between the earth and sky above, nothing can match a grandmother's love.

Somebody gave me this poem when my grandpa died, it made me feel better:

WHEN SOMEBODY DIES, A CLOUD TURNS INTO AN ANGEL, AND FLIES UP TO TELL GOD TO PUT ANOTHER FLOWER ON A PILLOW.
A BIRD GIVES THE MESSAGE BACK TO THE WORLD, AND SINGS A SILENT PRAYER THAT MAKES THE RAIN CRY.
PEOPLE DISAPPEAR, BUT THEY NEVER REALLY GO AWAY.
THE SPIRITS UP THERE PUT THE SUN TO BED, WAKE UP THE GRASS, AND SPIN THE EARTH IN DIZZY CIRCLES.
SOMETIMES YOU CAN SEE THEM DANCING IN A CLOUD DURING THE DAY TIME, WHEN THEY’RE SUPPOSED TO BE SLEEPING.
THEY PAINT THE RAINBOWS AND ALSO THE SUNSETS AND MAKE WAVES SPLASH AND TUG AT THE TIDE.
THEY TOSS SHOOTING STARS AND LISTEN TO WISHES.
AND WHEN THEY SING WINDSONGS, THEY WHISPER TO US, DON’T MISS ME TOO MUCH. THE VIEW IS NICE AND I’M DOING FINE

This may also sound kind of weird, but some songs have beautiful lyrics that I think would be appropriate to have read at a funeral. Or, how about appropriate verses from a children's Bible? They might be easier to read than from an adult Bible.

Thanks everyone. I'm loving the ideas. My brain is MUSH right now so all the help helps! :)

My Grandma passsed away not long ago and each great grandchild spoke at her funeral. Our Priest and funeral parlor director had wonderful ideas. Here are a few poems and sayings I had saved.
Thinking of you and your family

I really feel quite special
That God had chosen you.
To be a person in my life
Who knew me though and through.

The time that we spent talking,
I've always felt you've heard...
You've been so good at listening
To each and every word.

And even things I didn't share
You somehow heard them too.
I think this is a special gift
That God had given you.

So I just want to thank you
For being there for me
And showing me acceptance
And love so totally.

Great Grandmas hold our tiny hands for just a little while...but our hearts forever.

A Great Grandma is someone
Who's dear in every way.
Her smile is like the sunshine
That brightens each new day.
A great grandma is someone
Who plays a special part
In all the treasured memories
We hold within our heart.

WHAT ARE GRANDMAS FOR?

Grandmas are for stories
about things of long ago.
Grandmas are for caring
about all the things you know...
Grandmas are for rocking you
and singing you to sleep.
Grandmas are for giving you
nice memories to keep...
Grandmas are for knowing
all the things you're dreaming of...
But, most importantly of all,
Grandmas are for love.

Now I can't stop crying!! These are great poems! I lost my grandmother on July 31st this past year, and I think about her EVERY day!!! I truely miss her, but am thankful for every minute I got to spend with her! Thanks for posting these. Says exactly how I feel about her and I know that the pain will go away gradually but life will never really be the same. Thank goodness for Grandmothers! They are truely special!!!:)

A friend sent us this poem in a sympathy card when my MIL died.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a 1,000 winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sun on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled light
I am the soft star that shines at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there; I did not die.

I really like this, but I'm not sure it's right for a child to read for his Great Grandmother. However, maybe it will be useful for someone else reading this thread.

Death is Nothing

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other
That we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes
We enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me,
Let my name be ever the household word that
It always was.

Let it be spoken without effort,
Without the trace of a shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant
It is the same as it ever was
There is absolutely unbroken continuity.

Why should I be out of mind because I am
Out of sight? I am but waiting for you
For an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner .
All is well.

Canon Henry Scott Holland (1847-1918)

......but I don't know if a child would be able to read it without being overcome.

The Broken Chain

We little knew that morning that
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, in death
we do the same. ~ It broke our
hearts to lose you, you did not go
alone; for part of us went with you,
the day God called you home. ~ You
left us peaceful memories, your love
is still our guide; and though we
cannot see you, you are always at our
side. ~ Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same;
but as God calls us one by one,
the Chain will link again.
