Hi-

I currently have a Kodak DX7440 (about 3+ years old) and am serching for a new point and shoot. I love the ease of the Kodak cameras (I am not one for reading manuals). The night time and low light shots are awful, though.

Any suggestions...we are trying to keep it under $300.

I also like playing around with the editing software on the PC so that should be fairly easy as well.

I have 2 young kids so speed is a must.

As said before, I would like to take night shots (as well as in motion).

I also like a decent zoom (minimum 4x optical)

Image stabilization (what is the difference betw. digital and optical here)

Looking at the Kodak Z712 or 812 or possibly a Cannon ( I have no idea which).

Thanks in advance.

Most p&s are under that price point now.

Also, shot to shot speed and shutter delay have come a long way.

For night shots you will need a tripod. For motion night shots you need a DSLR to get a shot that is usable. P&S technology is just not there yet.

Optical is the only way to go. Digital is nothing more than a marketing term and will only bump up the ISO (which you can already do yourself).

You might want to look at the Fujis with the larger sensors. They tend to have the best reputation for a p&s in low light. I have yet to hear about any Kodak that does well with low light.

Thanks, Kevin. Now that you mention it, I used to have a Fuji and the night shots were excellent. (The day seem a bit dull, bu that was years ago). I would just be happy with a pic of the castle or the Epcot Ball at night. Dare to only dream about the fireworks;)

For the castle, SE, and fireworks, you just need a tripod. It is the parades, shows, and dark rides that give you problems with a p&s. Check out the Fuji S6000fd.
