Howdy All,

I am in the early stages of planning my next Disney trip. I want to go back to DL, but DD wants to return to WDW. I think WDW is a more expensive trip (excluding airfare). I posted on the WDW side of these boards...and not one person responded! So here's my question to all of you who have done both parks: Can WDW be done as cheaply as DL???? Our one consideration is I will not be renting a car so the hotel must have it's own transportation....

Thanks Guys:cutie:

Not for me!! But that's because I have AP's for DL!! Also with a $310 total for 5 nights at a hotel close enough to walk to the parks (big perk for me) I could not get that in WDW!! Plus to me food would be more expensive (only because there's tons of restuarants I want to try there!! And it would be more on the whole because I can fully enjoy DL in 3-4 days, but I am not flying all the way across country if it's less than 7-8!!!

SO for me, WDW is more expensive. It will really depend on your style!!

Andrea

Hi Rosie!

Excluding airfare makes it more logical to compare.

Hotel: Cheaper and better at WDW.

Transport: Free DME from MCO to WDW. Priceless!

Food: Comparable. Way more and better selection at WDW, though.

Souvies: I spend more at WDW, because we are at DL more frequently.

What about passes!?!?!? This is the big diff. If you have to buy passes for WDW, that will add a big chunk.

I have to disagree about hotel!! For me to get $54 a night down there, I would have to stay where I would need my own transportation which would add costs like shuttle/taxi/rental car!! At DL, I can spend that much for a walking distance hotel!

I'll agree the hotels down there are better, but I can't even ever get POP for less than $80 something a night after taxes!!

Andrea

Hi Rosie, Have you been to WDW before? Do you need alot of time to see everything? Then it would cost you more. But you can stay onsite at a value
Disney Hotel and get the transportation included. So no need for a car. When we went I thought the busses worked great, as long as we planned and scheduled for them. I would also consider the dining plan. WE loved it!!!!! Go to their website, and start putting in your requests, and see what they come up with. I did that and then found out AAA gave me a sweet deal. Also found out something very interesting... if you start your vacation on a low season date, they honor that price for the rest of your stay. I found that out after I had booked our stay. So I called back, and by booking one day ahead, (which was still value season) they gave me the rest of the week at those hotel rates. Saved enough money to book 3 more rooms for one more day and still was money ahead!!! That was in December. Don't know if they do that at DL???:confused3 Anymore questions... fire away!

Food is cheaper in WDW

Free transportation in WDW if you stay on-site

Passes at DL are cheaper than WDW

It's really hard to say. Both are such great parks and they have their own pros & cons. Right not WDW is cheaper for DH and myself because we are DVC members and can stay cheaper.

I have been to WDW before...and I must say the food is better...but as far as hotels are concerned...I think they're all more expensive. Almost all the "good neighbor" hotels tack on the hated service fee of $10 an night!! So $120 mediocre hotel becomes a $130 hotel. And while I know the Value Disney hotels are cheaper..the food courts are awful and there's nothing else around (without a car).

Heck...seriously thinking I'll tell DD that when she takes me on vacation, that's when we'll go to WDW!!! It's a shame I like her so much

Shoot, I hope she is not complaining about a free vacation to DL? Otherwise, I'll trade places with her if you'll have me!!

Andrea

Has anyone checked on the deal they're always advertising on TV??? $1600.00 for one week? I know that is at a value, but does that include tickets?

I have and that does include tickets and it's for 6 nights!! It is a great deal but with airfare costing me an extra $1000-$1200, it loses some of it's appeal because it costs me under $100 to get to DL!!

Nah, she's not complaining..it's become our little "game". She opens all her email to me with "WDW" and I send "DL" back to her. In the end, whatever we do it'll be great fun and we know it!!

Yah!! That evil little word. Flying!!!

It is evil because I really really want to go to WDW, but when I think of that $1000, that gets me three extra 3-4 day trips to DL during the year and I would have to give those up!!

I have to play Devil's advocate here: If you've never been to WDW it is definately worth some extra dough to go. DD and I have been to WDW at least three times...

Oh I agree, I would love to!! We have had the trips planned but then 2 years ago I didn't want my first trip to be while pregnant, then this year DH's job interefered!! While I always go to DL alone with me and the kiddos, I don't want our first WDW trip to be without DH!! So we wait again.....

Well imo a WDW vacation can be done more cheaply than a DLR trip especially on a per day basis. But, it can also be wayyyyyyy more expensive in your per day and probably will be more expensive in total if you don't count air fare.

Some General things.

1. Being in Portland, airfare to Orlando is going to be more expensive than that to one of the LA area airports. Also, given that LA has 5 airports as viable options, you can sometimes find a great deal into one of them. Orlando has only the one option. Tampa is in range but you'd have to rent a car if you flew in there probably negating any cost savings of doing so.

2. Doing WDW, and seeing most of it usually requires a week at least. Mk takes a couple days, Epcot takes a couple. AK and DS each take one. That's 6 days. You could easily spend a day each in the water parks plus a day to do Downtown Disney. And if you go to one of the hard ticket events at MK, well you'd do Disneyquest that day and get ready for the party afterwards. Well you're up to 9. Throw in a day of shopping and stuff at DTD or bumming around the resort and you're up to 10 days. You're still up to 7 with just the main parks. Well as you've surmised, 7-10 days of food lodging and tickets are going to run more than 3-4. And we haven't even gotten to Universal or Seaworld yet. And note that most on the WDW boards will tell you DS and AK can be done in 1/2 days each. If one has been there awhile or just doesn't want to see everything, that is probably true. But for a first timer who wants to see it all including the parades, they are both going to take a full day. .

3. Disney has value and moderate resorts there on-site that are far less expensive than those at DLR. And the values are cute. However, they are big and it can be a long walk to the bus stop. A couple of the mods are so big they have multiple bus stops. The values are no-frills though. And some of the off-site hotels across the street at Disneyland will cost you about the same as a value at WDW and the rooms themselves are bigger at the hotels across from Disneyland. But the values are very cute and we're satisfied with our stay in them. Note that these are 10-15 minute bus rides from some of the parks. If you want a resort on the monorail or in walking distance to epcot, prepare to shell out some bucks. However, some of the better rooms in the deluxes will cost you more than at DLR.

4. WDW usually offers better discounts than does DLR. So if you're flexible about when to go, you can decrease the cost of your trip. For example, the last two years they have offerred a free meal plan for arrivals in late August through September. We saved about $1200 doing that. Note we ran up total tabs on the meal plan to the tune of about $1800. But we wouldn't have run up those kind of tabs were we paying. So we ate better and saved about $1,200. They also offer AAA discounts on the rooms which can be substantial.

5. Once you get up to about 6 days worth of ticket, extra days cost you about $2 each. So the longer you stay, the per day cost of tickets go down.

6. Disneyland is all walking distance. WDW isn't. Many people insist on renting a car as they don't like the buses which can get to be Standing room Only, especially during the mass exodus after the firework shows or Fantasmic. Of course renting a car for a week can be expensive. I myself drive down so we don't need to rent one. We find the busses fairly convenient and instead of packing the lines like everyone else after the fireworks or the shows we do our shopping then or just leisurely sit. Disney is fine with it. They're fine with you easing the crunch on the buses for about a 1/2 hour or even longer, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE BUYING SOMETHING.

So you see it all depends upon when you go, whether you can get a deal on airfare or a package, what hotel you wish to stay in, etc, etc.

By the way Rosie, I find this board more friendly than the WDW boards.
Some of the dining boards have turned into.
This stinks. I hate the menu change. Boy, all you low class value resort stayers and your dining plan are ruining WDW restaurants. And I should know. I'm the worlds best foodie.

And I've noticed here the actual question being asked gets answered much more readily. Over there they tend to respond with what they like (and by extension the op should.) rather than thinking about what the op said they would like and finding something they think the OP would like. And many threads do degenerate into defending the favorite whatever from the infidels type deals.

It's become much more like that lately. It used to be far more like this board. Dunno why that is.

Yeah, I don't go over there hardly at all anymore!! Long Live the DL boards!!!

Wow!! That's nasty! Not one person responded to my request on the WDW. Thank you for all your input. Tell me about the food court at the value resorts...are they open late? Is there decent coffee to be had.

As others have said, it is a bit like comparing apples and oranges. For us a WDW trip is 3-4 times as expensive. Why? Because we drive to California and are already there to visit family - so transportation cost for us is zero to CA but airfare for six to WDW.

As also noted by others, it would be hard for us to spend more than four days at DLR. At WDW it is easy to spend ten days. More days equals more expense - but also more fun.

Finally, the close hotels at DLR and easy parkhopping should not be underestimated. Out of curiousity I counted up how many rides I went on at WDW over 10 days and how many rides I went on on a four day trip to DLR. Guess what? They were the same. About 70 rides. However, I saw twice as many shows at WDW (13 vs. 7).

What I am saying is that if you take advantage of the close hotels at DLR and easy parkhopping, you can do a lot more per day. On the other hand, there is less to do at DLR than WDW overall, especially outside the parks.
