Need A Cheap Solution

My cat (grrr) has ruined my couch cushion - again! She peed on it last night and I'm at my wits end.

The cushion has a cloth cover (removable) and the inside is a large feather pillow. This is totally soaked and the last time she did this I honestly didn't get all the smell out.

I need a cheap way to clean or replace this cushion. It is 20in X 62in X 5in. Any help appreciated because I cannot afford to just get rid of the couch.

I swear by Nature's Miracle. It can be found at pet stores. My friend swears by straight alcohol. Whatever you decide to do, you need to really soak your cushion in it. Because the urine has gone deep into the cushion, so must the solution. Then let dry. A fan will help it dry more quickly.

I know the feeling. My dog (13) has started to pee in the house. He's confined it to one area primarily, but it stinks!

I'm going to steam clean the carpet tonight, but I was thinking of dousing it with vinegar first. Have you tried that?

Thanks semo - but we tried that last time - used almost a whole bottle but the stink just didn't come out. Not sure if it has to do with it being feathers or what.

My cat is old - almost 15 years now - and she has decided this couch is a place to pee. I'm really getting tired of it.

vinegar is great. Our cat had diabetes, used to constantly go and when his litter box filled he would find whatever was convenient. The vinegar breaks it down and we used to clean with one of the products we found at the pet store (local, not a chain.) It was a big yellow bottle and I want to say four paws was the name, not sure. Is it possible to restuff it in that area? If you don't get it all out, the cat will just return to that area. If restuffing is not an option, I wonder if you could get into the cushion between the cover and the filling and possibly lay plastic (like a trashbag) over it to keep the smell from coming through and if he does return to that spot, at least it will only be topical and hopefully easily cleaned.

Wow! I'm really surprised! It has always worked like a charm for me. Sorry!

Not sure on cleaning, but could you put (even under the cover) some sort of waterproof, washable mat (thinking like a pad for a crib) on top of the cushion?

It's frustrating! I was glad (??) my older cat just decided to pee in front of the washing machine. At least if there was laundry there, it already was dirty (and washable.)

The way it was explained to me is that the reason they keep peeing there is because the pee turns to crystals and they can still smell it. I was told to buy Petzyme. It dissolves the crystals so no more smell. I found it at Petsmart. This is what the guy said to get when we bought our new carpet. This way if the dogs do pee on it it won't be in the pad and out warranty will still be good!

I don't know about restuffing it because it is feather. I would have to 'dig' to the middle of the pillow just to get to the area she's peed on this time.

ugh. So frustrating.

And the miracle stuff did work for a while - but I think this may have happened too many times now. We got the miracle stuff when we got our puppy and it was great the few times she had accidents.

But this is now about the 4th time the cat has peed on this couch.

I was thinking about using one of those baby crib pads once I get this clean/repaired/replaced. Wish I had thought of that last time.

i had this prob many years ago, not with feather stuffed cushions tho. I would say what ever you use ( vinegar, pet cleaner) your prob not using enough. Its prob not the greatest thing for the feathers, but don't be afraid to really get it wet with the product. lay down news papers and place the cushion on top, pour the cleaning product onto the area and let it drip through to the bottom, do this many times over... good luck.

also if you have the option while you're not at home (and can handle it) put cookie sheets with ammonia on the couch. Cats don't like the smell, she won't get on the couch. If she can't get on it, can't pee on it.

I worry about getting it so wet that it starts molding or mildewing on the inside.

And isn't ammonia a byproduct of urine? :lmao:

Try vinegar, pour a LOT of vinegar over the cushion, then put the cushion in the sun to dry. That should take out the smell and the sun drying will help as well. I'm sure vinegar isn't the best for feathers but.....I also use peroxide on our puppy stains, DD's doggie peed on her carpet quite a few times, the peroxide works on the stains. I have more stains to do but so far so good, and they aren't coming back like they usually do. Then before putting it back in the cover (which you should also wash with vinegar in the water) put a waterproof cover on it to help with this type of thing. You're lucky you can take your cushions off, our couch cushions are attached so the times our dog has peed on the couch we've had to spray it with Nature's Miracle and hope....

My cat destroyed my couch by using it as her own personal litterbox. I finally threw it out (couch, not cat). The problem is that once they "scent" it, they keep on coming back.

I still haven't bought a new couch because I don't want the cat destroying it. I was going to buy a cheap one and hope it outlasts the cat but I haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

I did figure out that I could get the couch and put some sort of waterproof matress pad over it and then put a blanket over that. That way she could only ruin the blanket. I hope. I'll let you know.

Good luck!

We had our couch cushioned restuffed by an uphosterer and professionally cleaned the fabric when the cat did similar, but it wasn't a cheap solution.

I put down one of those plastic carpet runners on our couch when no one is using it. I turn it over where the little spikey things are up so our cat won't even get up there. She now sleeps on the arm rests and has never pee'd there!:)

Oh that's a GREAT idea. I had a friend who's cat was clawing her couch, they stapled this stuff around those areas and the cat stopped, they hate those nubby things! :)

We swear by Wee Cleaner. We have 5 indoor cats and one likes to pee on the couch in the livingroom. We are not in the LR much and it is sometimes a few days before we discover the smell. You can order it on the net. We have spent HUNDREDS on other products and thousands on new furniture, this is the only one we have found to work!!
Let me know if you have success with anything!!
