I understand my son will need his birth certificate, license, and social security card. Once he show his id, will he need to keep the birth cert. and the ss card with him for the duration of the program, or can he send them home for safer keeping?

... what did you need your birth certificate for...? ive done the program twice so far... my most recent was spring 10... and I have yet to use... or even bring a birth certificate...

You don't need a birth certificate. It's just one of the different types of identification that you can decide to bring for work eligibility. Once you log-in the CP website has the list of "documents" for you to choose to bring. An ID and social security card are enough together just as a passport is enough on it's own.

Just a note on this subject of particular interest to the current incoming batch of CPs.

If you derive United States Citizenship through birth in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, a U.S. Territory, you can only present Birth Certificates issued after 1 July 2010. Birth Certificates issued prior to this date have been invalidated by the Government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and are no longer valid as proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

I thought that if you don't have a passport, you would need the ss card, the birth certificate and the government issued id (license)? this is what he is prepared to bring, I just don't want him leaving it his room all semester. I want to take it home with me.

If you do not have a passport, you would be required to bring a drivers license/state i.d. AND a second form of i.d., such as a social security (non-laminated) or a birth certificate (has to have raised seal, cannot use a copy). I am bringing a license, ss card and birth certificate, just to avoid hassle! That way I know I am well-covered!

You can bring then home with you after he checks-in. You don't need them the rest of your program for any program related reasons.
