Hello everyone and Welcome aboard the newest report from your good friend Katt!! This is my second dining review, and we did a heck of a lot more table services this time, so I figured I should share!

This post is pretty much copy and pasted from my TR intros, so pardon the dramatics, lol!

Who:

Me, Katt! Your Wilderness Explorer guide and ghost host for today!!

I’m 24 years old, or, a mere 6 if you go by the rules of Neverland, and of course, I am 6, and will always act like it, especially at Disney! Baha! My first trip was back in 1997 when I was a mere 7 (for real this time) over to Disneyland, back when it was one park. I was very fortunate to go on this trip as my Mom was a single mother and only worked part time in order to be home with me when she could! I then took a break from Disney for 14 years almost exactly, and returned in May 2011 with a group of friends, and from there, the addiction began!

When I’m not at flying around in an elephant in Florida, you can generally find me bartending at your local dinner theater way up here in the good ole Canada! I also dance, and have performed/danced/competed my entire life through a wide variety of things, and between the love for that, and love for Disney now have a goal to be part of the entertainment strain of the company! Ultimate dream: Festival of the Lion King bird! ACK! My one true love, but really, I’ll do anything if it involves performing. And after this most recent trip, I’ve decided that when my entertainment days are over, I would love to take up a role in Guest Relations and end up doing the variety of tours that Disney has to offer!

Now, who joined me on this trip? Well, first off, was my Mom; Ann! From here on we’ll call her Mom!

It was her second trip down to Disney World, after I took her on a surprise Birthday trip last Sept, where it was just the two of us and I showed her the ropes of everything! We met pretty much all the characters, ate at a TON of restaurants, and she even braved ever single ride that I went on! She did tell me to warn her next time I planned on taking her on Everest 3 times in a row though! Mom was super excited to get back into the swing of things, and have some dance parties with some characters and eat some good food again! Mom’s the mere age of 10, and was technically celebrating her birthday on this trip as well! She works part time I believe now, but is mainly retired from her official job. She does keep occupied though, as she’s on a gymnastics team strictly for people above the age of 60 (I believe that’s the age, could be wrong, haha).

Through this gymnastics team, comes the third member of our party, Anne!

When I started to talk to Mom about going down again in Sept, she said that Anne had always wanted to go, but her husband wasn’t a fan of crowds, so she would come with us!! Anne was celebrating a birthday this trip, on the 19, so it was even during the trip! And since it gets revealed later, I’ll just tell you, she was turning the 80 years young! Amazing!!

That about covers the big intros! There were MANY guest stars along the way, both old friends, familiar faces, and brand new people to meet!

When: September 11-19th!

I liked the idea of Chef Mickey’s on the first night to you know, check in the with Boss man and make sure he knew we were there and ready for a week of awesome magic! I also had been talking to Brian, a friend I made through tumblr/twitter, and since his birthday was the 10th, and we arrived on the 11th, that he would join us for dinner that night to celebrate!!

We checked in at the podium, where they sent us right away over to the plate to get the picture with no waiting at all!!

First experience using the PP plus, great, I mean, they scan the card, and you’re golden! We grabbed a seat in the waiting area and hoped that it wouldn’t be too long til we were seated, or til Brian showed up! Luckily, neither took very long, about 10 minutes and we were sitting over on the left hand side of the buffet, right by the kitchen door, and told our server would be around in just a moment for us! The greeter did suggest waiting for Donald, and then getting food as he would be coming around momentarily!

I of course jumped up to get a photo with my “number 1!” of the fab 5 gang, and he quickly took one seated pic with Anne and Brian and then was gone, kinda disappointing for our first character interaction of the trip, but hey, it could be worse, and it meant that it was TIME FOR FOOOOOODDD.

Guys, I don’t think you seriously understand how much I was looking forward to this, Disney food, after months of waiting, and I had heard this was a carb heaven, and was SO EXCITED! My first plates were:

A small piece of cornbread, and some Mickeroni and Cheese with some ketchup on top, and of course:

Starting at the top and going clockwise, I grabbed some broccoli with some cheese sauce, as you’ve got to at least pretend to be healthy on vacation, right? Lol, followed by Mickey shaped ravioli, ribs, tortellini, mashed potatoes, and some prime rib with horseradish.

Mom’s plate involved:

Cornbread, chicken, green beans, tortellini, carrots, and some prime rib. Brian was up next with:

Cornbread, roast chicken, ribs, mashed potatoes, and it’s lookin like some chicken at the end there, lol. Lastly was Anne who picked up a plate of:

Cornbread, it looks like some end cuts of prime rib, sushi, chicken nuggets, and some rice, and I can kinda see some salad looking things hiding underneath there! Haha!

We were all super hungry so it was absolutely amazing to have such a wide variety of food in front of us now, and it was YUMMY! Seriously, I had heard some bad things, and some good things about the food here, but in the end, it was a winner for us! The hits included: the Mickeroni, mashed potatoes, sushi, the peel and eat shrimp, and the roast beef. I cannot rave about the Mickeroni enough, like, best mac and cheese I have had in ages! NOM!

Needless to say, if you haven’t tried Chef Mickey’s for dinner, I suggest it!

Compared to the food however, the character interaction was not the greatest tonight, while we were eating, Mickey came by super quick, waved at everyone and then disappeared, not even stopping for a picture…oh well… His counterpart was around soon enough, and I was excited as my outfit for tonight was inspired by her, although my Minnie ears were in my bag still…derp..

It was a little disappointing though, as you can see, since Anne and Mom didn’t jump up for pictures right away, Minnie was off to the next table. We had luckily, been right on the time that the characters were all going in for a break, which meant it was time for DESSERT!!

I’ve got some Mickey domes, pretty much just an oreo with some chocolate mousse on it, but it was super delicious, and then a chocolate chip cookie, and some bread pudding, which was the best part hands down! While we were waiting for our server to come back around, either with drink refills, or the bill, either would have been nice, Goofy stopped by for a quick visit!

Mom made sure to get in for that picture though, Goofy’s her favorite! When they had all come out from their breaks, Mickey did come around, and waved at the table of us, made a heart with his hands, and blew us all kisses, so it was nice to know he hadn’t completely snubbed us that night! Our server eventually made her way back with some special surprises for us too!

BIRTHDAY CUPCAKES!!

Yum! It was a lovely little treat to end off our meal at Chef Mickey’s and to celebrate the birthdays of course! Pluto came around for a quick hello as well!

I’m started to think that more of these character pictures might be on Brian’s camera, but I’m really not sure, haha. I do know that just over the course of the night the characters didn’t seem too into it, and would skip half the table. I do understand that we’re all adults, and that half the table may have not been into the whole character thing, but at least stop to say hello, don’t just run to the kids next door. Disney is for children of all ages, and I hoped this wasn’t a sign of what was to come for the trip.

Not so hidden Mickey!! Donald did come around one more time to say hello to Brian and give him a quick hug, so that was nice!

While we were waiting for everything to finish up, and finish our birthday cupcakes, we started kinda chatting with the family next to us who had two small kids, and the boy noted one of the ladies birthday buttons, and said happy birthday to her. Well, the other then pointed out that it was both of their birthdays, and the boy responded with “You’re Ann…and you’re Anne…and it’s both your birthdays….you’re both Anne because you’re OOOOOOLLLLLDDDDD” #priceless. I promptly dubbed it “quote of the day” and wrote it down in my trip journal! When it came time to leave, the little boy jumped up and gave Anne a hug goodbye as well, which was beyond adorable!

The server finally appeared with the bill, which we had to promptly wave her down so she could change it. See, we had the dining plan, and Brian wasn’t part of that, and had his CM discount to add on, so we had to separate off his meal, then send back the bill with a credit card for the beers Mom and Anne had gotten and the DDP card! Needless to say, it took a while to get done with, but hey, I’ve come to expect that from Disney buffet places! How did it score overall though?

Food: 5/5
Food was all hot, fresh, and delicious, with lots of variety of dishes, meat, veggies, carbs and something for everyone

Ambiance:3/5
It was kidna crowded in there, and we were DIRECTLY beside the kitchen door, so it was a pain in the butt. I also scored a little lower because the character interaction was so bad, I’ve never had it this bad in a dining location, but hey, there’s a first time for everything. The napkin twirling was fun though!

Service: 2/5
Yup. She didn’t come around a lot, at all, and when my lemonade was finished I couldn’t find her to grab a water, and from the time we’d seen all the characters and were ready for the bill, it took FOREVER to get everything sorted out and get out of there.

Overall: 4/5
Would I return, YES! I honestly would, because every experience service/character wise is very different, and the food was seriously that good!

Cost: $41.95 each for the dinner buffet
$6.95 each for the Coronas (That’s strictly a guess lol)

In total we paid $14.00 for a bill that would have cost us $139.85

DINING PLAN WIN.

Food of the Meal: Mickeroni and cheese and the bread pudding from dessert!

It’s the truth! It’s actual that we hiked across the park for a lunch in Tomorrowland! Was it satisfactual?! Well, let’s find out, shall we? The three of us entered Cosmic Rays, an old time favorite of mine for some luncheons in Disney World, and proceeded to pick up a portable menu to check out what we wanted. It was completely dead inside the restaurant, granted, it was only around 11 am, but hey, we had been there long enough, and this way, were beating the crowds!

Anne decided that she originally wanted chicken nuggets, but didn’t want to go over to Bay 1 to order since we were ordering at Bay 3. I thought about just ordering a kids nuggets meal, but she changed her mind and we all ended up with the Turkey Sandwich!

I got mine with a bottle of water, French fries (gotta make that fancy sauce!) and some grapes for later. Anne got water, fries, and a carrot cake, while Mom got an iced coffee, cucumber salad and a mango gelato. We found a space over in the room with Sonny Eclipse and enjoyed his musings while we ate! It was a nice little break from the heat, and Sonny was actually pretty amusing, although we were there long enough to hear him start to repeat everything, which is when we decided to start to pack it up.

How was everything? Well the sandwiches were good, as per usual I took one slice of bread and a chunk of the meat off and went “open faced” sandwich style to eat it, the fries were super delicious as always! I mean, I don’t often eat food like that til vacation, so they’re extra tasty! Anne wasn’t the biggest fan of her sandwich, but her and Mom both grabbed containers to keep the leftovers for snacks later, which I did with my fruit. Anne also scraped off the icing, but liked the carrot cake, and over all, the mango gelato that Mom got was the winner of this meal! I’m not sure if it was the “no sugar added” stuff or not, but it was super delicious, yummy yummy! It wasn’t sugary or ice cream tasting, it literally tasted like I was eating a frozen mango with like, honey or some natural sweetener on it. SO much yum!!

Cost:

Turkey Sandwich: $9.99 each (we had 3 of them)
Fries: $2.99 (x2)
Cucumber Salad: $3.29
Carrot Cake: $ 3.99
Gelato: $3.99
Water: $2.50 (x2)
Iced Coffee:$4.49

Total Meal Cost: $56.71

Wow….that’s insane. Obviously if I was paying OOP, I probably wouldn’t be getting a dessert, but I didn’t factor my grapes in there anyways as I couldn’t find a cost breakdown. And, since we had free dining, it was FREE! #WIN

Food: 3/5
I would usually score better, but since Anne didn’t really like it, and when I asked about “food of the day” she said “Certainly not that sandwich” it’s gotta get knocked down a bit. Lol. The gelato was delicious as were the fries though!

Ambiance: 5/5
-It was early, seats were more than easy to find, not a lot of people in there
-Fresh condiments/toppings and such out and ready to go
-Sonny provided some nice entertainment

Service: 4/5
-Overall the CM’s were very friendly and helpful but when Anne was wanting chicken nuggets the woman was all “NOT THIS BAY!” kinda thing when there was a way for Anne to get the kids meal, which is all she would’ve eaten anyways.
-Food came out quick and hot though!

Would we go again: Yes! There’s always more things to try if the sandwich wasn’t a hit, and I love that place lol.

Food of the Meal: Mango Gelato!

Great review so far! Those sandwiches at Cosmic Rays look really good!

thanks for your reviews so far...

I could eat my weight in prime rib..the redder the better..hahaha...

Anxious to read the see the rest..

Thanks for taking the time to do this

I made my way up to the podium and Be Our Guest to check us in for dinner, I’m sure we were right around the right time to be there, and check in was seamless and nice and easy. I requested to be put in to Shelly’s section, and the cast member said that she would do what she could, but there were no guarantees. Oh well…. I also noticed the cast member beside her was definitely one of the ones from the “Disney Family Video 3” one of the “bosox” one’s we should all know because they’re amazing. When they’re going through asking the CM’s what the best part of working there is and then there’s one that says “I like makin magic” and then it goes off into a “making magic” part, yeah, totally saw her, and mentioned it to her. Turns out that she has had people creepily come up behind her and whisper in her ear “I like makin magic…” #creepy….

We waited on the bridge for under ten minutes, and then our buzzer was going off and we were headed into the beauty of a castle!

The greeter seating us asked if we had been there before, how the day was, you know, the usual, and then started to say “you will have the special experience of dining in….” and I knew what was coming, we were definitely being put in the West Wing….cool…but not my favorite. I dunno what it is, but I don’t really feel the magic as much in the WW, I mean, the ballroom is so gorgeous and wonderful and amazing that I much prefer to eat there. I hoped it was because Shelly would be serving us, and that it would all be okay, but who knew?

The cast member sat us and said “and your server Mark will be around in a moment for drink ordered” ….derp…that’s not exactly the same…. Oh well, we were still at BOG, and it was going to be a magical experience as per usual, right?! I also noticed the little Lumiere on the back of the menu’s!

Our table was one table away from the portrait, and we had a pretty clear shot of the enchanted rose from there too! I also was quick to explain to Mom and Anne to watch both of those things when it would start to “storm” in the Wing!

Mark was around quick enough to take drink orders for us, I got a glass of the Riesling, while Mom and Anne both got chardonnay, because hey, when you can have wine in the Magic Kingdom, you do! He started us off with some buns, and took our dinner orders within a few minutes.

It was somewhere in there that I noticed we were RIGHT beside Shelly’s section, and I mean, DIRECTLY beside our table was a table of hers…so close…clearly they had tried. By the time we actually noticed each other it was a little too late for her to transfer our table over to her, but since she had a trainee that night, she had a little more time to chat, which was super great! We caught up for a bit and then our food was coming out, so she left us to eat and said she’d pop by in a bit!

Mom had decided on the Layered Ratatouille, which I’ve always been interested in, so I knew I’d be trying a bite lol!

While Anne and I both opted for something that was brand new to the menu as of that day! They had added a “Herb Crusted Lamb Rack” and it was obvious that’s what I was getting. It came with veggies and celery root, so after getting Mark to explain what the heck that was, I asked if I could get the mac and cheese for a side instead.

Anne stuck with the original menu options, but I didn’t bother grabbing a picture of hers. So, what did we all think? Well, the lamb was absolutely incredible! It was amazingly tender, juicy, flavorful and just all around the perfect meal to end the day with! It came out with a gravy on the side, but it was so delicious and juicy that I didn’t need to add any of the gravy!

As for the ratatouille, it was great! Veggies were all cooked nicely, presentation was wonderfully done, and Mom even ended up eating the onions she said she was going to end up picking out! I tried a bite and liked it, I think I’ll probably get this next time, lol.

We finished up our entrees and after the plates were cleared it was time for the dessert cart to come around! I had heard that they had recently changed a few things, and that the Grey Stuff was now an official menu item, so I was torn, do I get that, or do I get a delicious cupcake?!?! When it came down to it, I decided on the Strawberry cupcake again;

While Anne got the Tropical Fruit Cream Puff:

And Mom ended up with the Grey Stuff;

Dessert was great as always, I was seriously noting a lack of sweet tooth on this trip, as the cupcake was almost too sweet a few bites in this time around! Clearly things are changing with my tastes lol! I tried a little bit of Anne’s cream puff and it was good, a definite interesting mix of flavours, but it was nice and light and yummy. The grey stuff was of course delicious, it came on a little oreo cookie like crust that was good.

Some point during dessert Shelly came over again to check up on us and made a comment to me “what? No grey stuff??” To which I explained that there were too many choices, and how was I supposed to pick a cupcake or the grey stuff, and I missed the days where it would’ve come out for Anne and Mom’s birthdays anyways so I would’ve gotten it anyways. Well, a few minutes later, Shelly came back with this:

My own little plate of Grey Stuff with MICKEY SPRINKLES! This girl’s the best, seriously, always the best. I thanked her profusely and we continued to catch up a bit. We had originally been planning on meeting up the day earlier at POFQ as I had brought her some Canadian treats, but she had gotten held up with a tour and some work stuff she’d been doing, so we had to make up for that! Mom and Anne talked a bit with her about the trip and Mom was more than certain to thank her for “taking me under her wing” so to speak, lol.

Just a little bit of backstory as I realized there are probably people who have no clue what I’m talking about, last September, Mom, Paige (the bff) and I dined at Tony’s, where we had Shelly as a server. The experience was amazing and we kind of made friends with her, and she told us she’d be moving to BOG when it opened finally. Come Feb, Paige and I are having dinner there and spot her, immediately pull her aside and somehow she remembers us and we catch up. We exchanged facebooks and numbers and now have been keeping in contact a whole lot, we’ve explored celebration together and she’s just always such an amazing human being and I’m insanely grateful to have met a friend like her!

Anyways, with dessert over, it was time to start really taking a look around, I mean, we were in the forbidden West Wing, there were so many things to explore!! But first:

Cost:
Riesling: $9.00
Chardonnay: $11.00 x2

Ratatouille: $ 17.49
Lamb Rack: $28.49 x2
Grey Stuff: $3.99
Cupcake/Puff: $4.19 x2

Total Meal Cost: $117.84
We Paid: $31.00 plus tip.

Food 5/5
-Everything was amazing, the buns were still warm and crispy, Ratatouille was cooked very well, Mom ate veggies she thought she wouldn’t, Lamb was perfection, the mac and cheese on the side had a couple of dry bits around the outside but was otherwise perfect. Desserts were great, and the menu had a ton of options/variety. The wine was great, the Riesling is a more sweet wine, but it went perfect with what I wanted and was delicious!

Ambiance4/5
I much prefer the ballroom to the West Wing, and when in the WW, you get the “thundering” and such so often that it does kind of get annoying, it’s a much more magical experience in the ballroom, but hey, we were close to Shelly so it was worth it

Service: 3/5
-Once ordered, our meals were super quick to come out, but everything else, including the drinks took a while. I’ve definitely had better service here, but that’s something that will change hourly, lol!

Would we go again; Of course!!

After seeing Pooh and Tigger we realized that Pooh wasn’t the only one with a rumbly in his tumbly, and hey, there happened to be a restaurant directly across from us, AND, get this; it was the one I had wanted to eat at! Flame Tree BBQ!! Lucky for us, it was only around 11:30 so the lines were pretty much non existent! We ordered, and then meandered around the corner and down a path to one of the further tables.

Anne got the Pulled Pork Sandwich that came with coleslaw, and fruit for dessert!

Mom got the Smoked Chicken Salad w/mixed greens tossed in a barbeque vinaigrette and drizzled with chipotle ranch dressing.

And lastly, I went big or went home, and got the Ribs and Chicken Combo with baked beans and coleslaw. I also opted for the Key Lime Mousse for dessert.

The cast member who had been working at the counter had given us the extra surprise of some BIRTHDAY CUPCAKES. And she’d even been nice enough to throw a third one in for me! Yay!

Since it was lunch time, it was time for a drink, Mom and Anne both got the Safari Amber beer

And I chose the Mandarin Orange Vodka Lemonade

So, how was everything? Well, I absolutely loved my meal, it was all super tasty, not dry or fatty. The beans were tasty, the ribs were delicious, and I even really liked the chicken! Nom! Coleslaw, not so much, but hey, it had a weird “dressing” on it that I didn’t really enjoy, and I’m not much of a coleslaw fan anyways! Mom really liked her salad, she was surprised by all the beans and chick peas that were in it too, added bonus. Anne her sandwich was good, but it was a little too smoky for her taste, she did seem to like it better than the Cosmic Rays sandwich though, so that was good! The key lime mousse was not a winner this round, I don’t really remember why, but I know I didn’t like it… Lol. The birthday cupcakes however, aw man, those things are SO DELICIOUS!! Like, those little vanilla ones are seriously my FAVORITE! I did like that Anne and Mom weren’t too keen on them, MORE FOR MEEEEE!!

As for the drinks, I liked my cocktail, but next time I’d probably go with the beer instead. It wasn’t too boozy, but wasn’t my favorite. The Safari Amber beer however was actually super tasty, it was almost like a fruit ale, like Wraspberry Ale, pretty sure that’s just a Canada thing… It was still beer tasting, but a nice light almost fruit taste to it!

Cost:
Safari Amber Beer: $6.75 x2
Mandarin Vodka: $6.75

Rib & Chicken Combo: $15.19
Pulled Pork Sandwich: $9.19
Chicken Salad: $9.19
Lime Mousse: $3.99

Total Meal Cost: $57.81
We Paid: $20.25

Food 4/5
-Pulled pork too smoky for Anne’s liking
-The key lime mousse wasn’t very good at all this time around
-Otherwise food was fantastic!

Ambiance: 4/5
-I kind of wish there was some indoor seating, not necessarily because of heat or anything, but because of birds, I so don’t trust them when I have food, even the cute little ducks, they can be vicious, lol!

Service: 5/5
-Cast members here were all very friendly and lovely people to chat with that morning
-Gave us an extra birthday cupcake so we’d all have one!

All in all it was a nice lunch, the heat wasn’t really getting to us down where we were sitting, and we had a nice view of the water. It wasn’t super crowded or crazy or anything so we took the time to finish our drinks and I caught up on our trip report notes while we just relaxed, it was great!

Great reviews and pics! I happen to really like dinner at Chef Mickeys too:flower3:

Looking forward to the next installment :)

Terri

Subbing in, looks like you ladies had a great trip. The food is making me hungry!!! Can't wait for more!

We arrived back at Port Orleans around 3:30 with a mission on our mind, a snack mission of sorts, we had to get ourselves some Beignets!

We used a snack credit for the order of 3 which was perfect, one for each of us, it was also fantastic to watch them be made fresh right in front of us! Yay!

Cost:$2.99

We Paid: ZERO! Yay!

The beignets were good, they were a little hollower than the ones Anne had had in New Orleans, and I had had over in Disneyland, but they were still tasty. Beignets are tricky though, that powdered sugar can really cause a problem if you inhale it while trying to eat them! Baha.

Ladies and gents, if you know me at all, or you know anything about the quick service places in DHS, you know where we were headed for breakfast, Starring Rolls! Mom and Anne starting checking out the bagels and stuff at the doorway, but I told them to wait for the goodies that were coming up later, look at everything, then pick!

I think we all know that Anne went with a cinnamon roll again!

I clearly was in a food picture mood this morning, I just wanted to eat everything!

Mom had her eye on one of these:

Hungry yet?

After checking out all of our options, I nearly picked the chocolate cherry cupcake, but let’s be serious, there are better choices out there!

There wasn’t any seating left over in the Starring Rolls patio, but since the Hollywood Brown Derby wasn’t open yet there were people sitting on that patio so we grabbed a table in there!

I chose the Red Velvet Cheesecake Cupcake and a water, because let’s be serious, I wasn’t feeling great, so a cupcake for breakfast that had a bunch of dairy and sugar in it would be a WONDERFUL idea, right?

Sure looks like a great idea! It was super filling for breakfast, definitely just enough food for a meal, but I will tell you, it wasn’t the greatest choice, I should have opted for a banana or some fruit, but when there’s cupcakes, you eat them. I would definitely come to regret it later…eck…

Mom got the fruit tart, I did try a bite of it and it was great too, she also got some cappuccino or some fancy coffee, while Anne got a coffee and a cinnamon bun, naturally! She enjoyed hers as well and we took a nice little break while everyone else raced around us to attractions, it was actually nice! Lol.

Cost:
Red Velvet Cupcake: $4.19
Fruit Tart: $3.79
Cinnamon Bun: $2.99
Coffee: $2.29
Cappuccino: $3.39
Water: $3.50

Total Cost: $20.15
We Paid: $0.00

We did use all snack credits for this meal, which wasn’t really the greatest of ideas, as a lot of the stuff we got was under 3 dollars. I did attempt to explain that to Anne and Mom, saying that they’d probably want to save their snack credits for things that were a bit more expensive, but hey, it worked out in the end anyways.

Is the topping on the red velvet cupcake Heath (toffee) or nuts?
