We're flying to orlando on monday and staying at animal kingdom lodge. We're planning to get a fridge in our room and get a taxi down to a supermarket the first night and get snacks and breakfast stuff.

So, where's the nearest place to go?

I think i read somewhere there's a Gooding's close to DTD, but that it is rather expensive. Does anyone know anywhere better?

:D

Hi
there is a large grocery store operated by Winn-Dixie on the 192 just off Formosa Gardens. Coming from AKL onto Sherberth Road and then on a short stretch of the 192 should be under 10 minutes ( we used this shortcut to Disney regularly a few weeks ago).

Prices were reasonable, and we shopped fairly frequently whilst at our villa on Indian Creek.

There is also a large Publix, which is slightly cheaper, but is another 2.5 miles further on the 192

Anyone else agree / disagree?

Mark

Not sure about the Winn-Dixie but if you're going to get a Taxi then it wouldn't cost much more to go to the Publix further west along the 192.

I think there may be 2 Publix stores between Sherberth Road and the end of the 192. :teeth:

We used the one at the end of the 192 which was nice and quiet and reasonably priced. I cant say I remember seeing any taxis so I'm not sure how you would go about getting one for your return -I guess you could phone for one.

Personally I'd say the money you spend on a taxi would eat up any savings you might make over simply buying a few essentials at the resort shop - not to mention the vacation time you'd waste getting there and back!

How are you getting from the airport to your resort? If you are doing a private transfer then you might consider a towncar from someone like Florida Tours (one of our board sponsor so just head over to the transportation board and you'll find their banner ) who include a free 1/2 hour grocery stop on the way in. In might prove more cost effective and you'll save time as you'll stop off somewhere that you have to pass anyway...

i love it when people say Goodings is more expensive.
On the amount of food you're going to buy when you're in orlando on vacation, at most you'll pay a few dollars more. If i lived in Orlando then i might not shop at goodings, but for the amount we need over the course of our vacation? I'd much rather enjoy the gourmet selection at Goodings and pay a little bit more (and it's really only a few cents more).

whatever.

Yes, the closest to AKL is the Winn-Dixie (which used to be a Goodings and I think is now badged as 'Marketplace') at the Formosa Gardens Shopping Center. It's not much further to Publix, though. As you approach the 192 on the Sherberth Road, you take a right onto Black Lake Road just before the lights. This takes you out onto the 192 right next to Publix.

I agree with Penny, though. A taxi will be expensive as you'd have to get it to wait whilst you did your shop - there won't be any cabs waiting around near the supermarkets.

if you take a town car from the airport, some of the limo companies include a stop at a supermarket on the way to your hotel....this might be your best option...

Hey, thanks for all your great info, but i just had a brainwave (DOH). We're going to be spending the first full day at IOA and then eating dinner on I Drive after, so it would make sense to go and grab some bits from somewhere on i drive. I remember there was a walgreens at the top near wet n wild, what about a bit further down, near the whyndam (sp?)/ big mcdonald's area?
Then we could just do a shop on the way back rather than going specially.
