I was born and raised in New Jersey, I'm allowed to say this.

If they did pump gas, I'm sure they wouldn't follow the signs saying...turn off engine while pumping gas! I was also born and raised in NJ and remember parking in front of a convenience store to run in and get something. Yup, left the car running if it was something at the counter. I would never do it these days! The car would be gone by the time I got out.

That reminds me. I also remember occasionally parking somewhere in a lot and occasionally leaving a window open while going in shopping. I see it all the time here. It looks so weird! LOL! In our area of FL, you didn't do that.

It never ceased to amaze me that people get in such a twist over a law designed to protect them from from their own stupidity.

I heard them talking about this on a local radio station the other day. There are some towns that you can get fined for leaving your car running in your own driveway.
As to gas pumping, I never want to pump my own gas! Hate it when we travel out of state and have to do it. I don't remember it being much cheaper if at all when you've got to pump your own.

I found this on the NJDEP website..I think the law is more for buses, delivery trucks, etc..


Idling and Queuing

Idling and queuing of trucks and buses, while a seemingly minor point actually can have a significant impact on local air quality and be a significant source of fine particulate emissions (Queuing refers to buses standing in line in front of school, casinos, etc., waiting to pick up passengers.). Under the Governor’s new plan, the DEP would implement an enhanced enforcement program targeting diesel vehicles such as charter buses, long-haul trucks, short-haul delivery trucks and public tranportation buses. These vehicles are prohibited from idling for more than three minutes if the vehicle is not in motion (click here to view Compliance Alert). The Governor’s plan would also tighten idling exemptions in the current rule. Finally, the Governor is pursuing statutory authority to allow state and local police to help enforce the standards.

I won't bother to argue the Nazi point -- except to say that if this was a Nazi state I would not be living here.

But I have seen the no running trucks/vehicles sign at a movie theater on Rt. 22. It was the first time I ever saw it and I did wonder what it was about.

I wouldn't leave my car running in a parking lot because I would worry about it being stolen.

Man, that's exactly how I feel!
Full service is SO great when it's ten degrees. I open up my window just a tiny crack. Slip my debit card out, slide the receipt back in. No more exposure to the elements than absolutely necessary!!!

Well:

You have to drive on the right hand side of the road.

You have to stop at stop signs.

You have to stop at a traffic light if it is red and got if it is green.

You can't litter.

You have to signal when making a turn (but I don't think anyone does that in New Jersey! )

You have to stay in your car while someone pumps the gas.

Etc. etc.

I understand the law and think it's valid, just as the others are. In a public place. But in your own driveway?!?!?!

I have to agree with you on this one.

As far as what one poster said about not being able to leave things in a locked car where he lives what about a child seat? Would you have to take it out everytime you parked your car somewhere? That law just doesn't make any sense.

When it comes to leaving the car running this is something I never do even in the dead of winter. I have seen lots of people do it though. I know of a few parents that leave children in a car while they run in to some store.

You need to read the law carefully. It is referring to diesel vehicles only. Unfortunately diesel truck drivers are having a problem with it. Apparently they sleep at truck stops with their vehicles running for short times, in order to have heat. They can't do that now.
As to pumping my own gas, no desire to do that at all. In NJ right before the Phila. bridges gas is like 1.69. Cross the bridge to philly and pump it myself for 1.95. What would we get if we pumped our own. Plus if I fill my tank here in NU the attendant washes my windows and offers to check my oil. Not a service offered in pump your own states.
Wawa's signs are deceptive. They have the fines in large print all over the front of the store. Inside, by the register they have the actual statute in small print.

In NJ, you can't leave a running car, you can't pump gas, you can't talk on the cell phone while driving (unless you have a handsfree gizmo) , you have to pay to go on most of the beaches, and you can have a governor that gives jobs to gay lovers.

Sorry, but the inhumane murder of millions is the result of a Nazi state--- not laws about cars. Somehow, I can't see the comparison between the effort to turn the key in your ignition and being tortured and gassed.

The word nazi is used too loosely. How fortunate to have the biggest problem or inconvenience in life be the need to turn off one's car.

If the object of this law is to reduce air emmissions, then let the Governor do something about the NJ toll booths. Not having to sit in stop & go traffic for 20 minutes or more everytime to pay a toll would definitely reduce the air emmissions.
