I'm about to book the EBTA out of Galveston next May. I know we're doing a balcony but wanted some opinions on whether to go with the 7a navigators or cat 6. I've looked at the pictures, the navigator looks a bit claustrophobic and not somewhere I'd like to spend a lot of time.

Any strong opinions one way or the other? I've only done inside staterooms and secret porthole rooms.

We have had the navigator verandas twice on the Magic and enjoyed them. It's a porthole with out any glass on a veranda. On our last cruise on the Fantasy we had an ocean view room and had the same type of view

Pros
More protected from wind and rain, I though they weren't as windy and even left my beach towel on a chair to dry.
Private and cozy, you feel like you are the only one on the ship.
My DH took several FANTASTIC pictures of ports through the round opening.
Very shady

Cons
They can be dark and don't let as much light in the room.
Standing the the room, your view out the door through the veranda opening is the same as it would be with an ocean view.

I upgraded to a navigator veranda and we loved it . It had a nice boat theme to it instead of just bars and glass . I didn't feel confined it was nice . It might be a little smaller but it was good for me and the wife . I hadn't had a regular veranda room though.

I had a cat 7A navigator veranda on my May 21st cruise to Alaska. I won't book one again, if I was sitting on the couch, all I could see was the sky. I would have preferred having a single port hole ocean view.

I have had a regular veranda with a plexiglass wall and I liked it much better.

We booked a VGT room and got a cat 6 last year so not a navigators verandah but still a solid white wall. It was ok but I would not book that or a VGT again in case I get assigned to a room like that. We are going on a sailing in the fall that will most likely offer VGT rates but we paid regular price for a 7a "obstructed view" room to ensure we get the plexiglass wall for a better view from inside the room and more light. The solid white wall was especially frustrating for our young child b/c we had to hold her up to see anything and she wanted to climb the furniture to see so we had to get that removed. I highly recommend the 7a rooms that are labeled "obstructed view" - it's basically a regular plexiglass verandah w/ one corner of the balcony w/ a small solid wall. Best of both world - you get the view of the plexiglass verandahs and a little extra privacy. Google "hidden verandah" and you should find the room #s. 2 on deck 6 and 2 on deck 7. Ours is a recategorized cat 5 for a cat 7 price!

I think for a transatlantic cruise, it would be perfect. There really isn't anything to "see" and it could be very windy. I would not want one for Alaska or Panama Canal as there are lots of things to see all the time.

We have stayed in a Navigator Veranda several times (Magic and Wonder) and we always enjoyed it.

:thumbsup2 We just had one on deck 7 and it was great!

The 4 cabins mentioned are 6134, 6634, 7120 and 7620. We've had 7620 several times and love the cabin, can't wait to sail in it again in Sept.

Ditto to the above! We had 7620 on our Magic sailing to the Bahamas and it was awesome! That being said, our 5 year old was at eye level with the railing, so we switched our 7A booking to a 5B booking for our upcoming Alaskan cruise because we couldn't get a "secret veranda" room. We figured he wouldn't be able to see anything.

We have sailed both with a Navigator Verandah and a Verandah and have loved both. I'm uber-claustrophobic, but never felt a problem with the Navigator. It has a wonderful little bench on one side, which was the perfect place for me to curl up and read a book if I was in need of some downtime (or me time).

I have a 7a booked on the dream. Are the navigator verandas enclosed except for the port hole? Also, can you see anything if you are sitting down?

The Dream/Fantasy do not have Navigator veranda cabins. The 7A's on those ships are smaller or obstructed views.

From DCL's website:

Please note, the navigator's verandah is typically smaller than other verandahs, and may feature an obstructed view.

Yes, be careful with the 7As and do check the stateroom reports up in the FAQ sticky. Some of those 7As are really obstructed or have very small verandahs.

Thank you! I found some reviews on the room I have booked, and it sounds ok ( or a real deal depending on how you look at it).
