Cast:
Katholyn: Newly qualified for AARP. Fell in love with Disneyland when it was brand new-decided I loved WDW more on a short trip in 1982,; felt cheated with a 3 day trip in 1991. Will use any excuse to go back again.
Wilgus: My husband who is severely Disney impaired; thought WDW was nice but not interested in ever going back and who I love anyway.
Kim: My sister's 24 year old daughter who is going throug a divorce-never been to WDW and can't wait.
Dustin: Kim's 6 year old son and my surrogate grandson-never been to WDW.
Up again, at 6:30. Dressed and out to the bus stop for the first bus. We are going to see the Islands of Adventure today.
We went to Seuss Land first off and rode Cat in the Hat. This was the cutest ride. We all loved it. Then we went to Confiscos at 11:30 for a character lunch. We had stopped there first thing to make a reservation only to learn that they don't make reservations on weekends. So we went back and were the first table to be seated.
This character lunch was a big hit with Dustin. He got to see Woody Woodpecker, Beetle Bailey (neither he nor his mother had heard of Beetle Bailey-oh my), Cat in the Hat, Grinch, Spiderman and Dr. Doom. There was also a fortune teller who was very funny. She put her hand on top of Dustin's head and said, "Your name is George, your favorite food is pizza and your favorite color is grey, right? Just say yes." He got a kick out of this and he reacted favorably to the characters. I had been a little concerned because he had once explained to me, with great disdain, that the characters were only people in costumes.
This is the best park if you like thrill rides. They have really good child swap areas located right where you get on and exit the ride with entrances on both sides. It worked out well for Kim and me. The first roller coaster we rode was Fire and we wanted to ride together so tried to talk Dustin into just waiting for us in the child swap area-the ride only lasted a minute and a half. The attendants told us it would be allowed but Dustin refused. So I rode first. This was the first roller coaster Dustin had ever seen and I figured out why he didn't want his mother and me to ride together when I finished my ride and waited with him while his mother rode. As soon as he saw me he grabbed me and hugged me and kissed me with such relief. He thought I was going to fall out and be killed and he didn't want his mother and me to ride at the same time because he thought we would be killed and he would be left there alone! LOL, poor thing.
Dustin enjoyed the Bilge Rats ride and he and I got soaked from the waist down even though we had ponchos. Don't know why but I was sure wet. The Jurassic Park River Ride was also a big hit.
The longest line we faced that day was for Spiderman (the second longest was 1 fish 2fish~40 minutes~ yuck). We kept hoping the line would get shorter but it kept getting longer. We finally ended up waiting 90 minutes to ride this. The queue was incredibly long. We kept going through doors and I would think we're almost there, only to find another room full of mazes to queue through. That was frustrating but the ride was incredible. We all loved it. I have to say that the 3D effects were superior to anything I saw at Disney. Maybe because it was a cartoon. This ride was actually worth that long wait (at least this time it was-don't know if I would wait that long again, though). Our last ride of the day was Incredible Hulk and we only waited about 10 minutes for that.
We were back at the hotel by 9 and ordered pizza. After we ate, Dustin managed to sneak his water pistol out on the balcony, even though he had been told several times not to play with water out there. All of a sudden, he streaks back into the room and tries to hide behind the bed. Turns out he had been spraying water over the balcony and there were people below getting wet. Apparently one of them had shouted, "Someone call security!" He didn't play with water out there anymore.
Dustin had managed to get pizza all over his new clothes and Kim and I had to walk about 3 buildings away to use the laundry facilities. Very inconvenient. The boys were asleep by the time we finished up the laundry and returned to the room and we were asleep shortly thereafter.
Note: Universal can't be compared to Disney any more than you can compare apples to oranges but I am glad we got to visit both Universal and Islands of Adventure. They were wonderful fun.
Next: Pirate Cruise
