We just got back, and I had a mess right before we left with national, could not post till now. I am a long time EA endorser and really like national BUT I had a real problem.

I went to print out my ressie the nite before for my convertible I had rented, 16 nites at $502 I noticed it said your credits will expire in december 05' and you are elgible for 1 day free rental? Not sure about this cause never used the credit thing before could not figure it out online, SO I called the emerald club (big mistake) asked was it too late to use the credit? would it alter my rate? etc... . she said lets check well you use it as a coupon, so you have to drop your entertainment coupon and use the rental credit code but it saves you another 20 odd dollars down to 482.00 do you want to change it? I asked it anything else changed she said no, No problem. your all set. So I figured it would take a while to switch online, and finished packing, in the morning I pulled it up online and about died my price was now around 700.00 WHAT???

Only thing listed is some charge they added stating changing charge? So I immediately (tried the codes and got a rental with EA locked in, $345.00) and called Emerald club. She told me it was a "change" fee cause I booked my ressie with priceline and you can only book it for credits online or on there phone line. I told her I have NEVER used priceline and didn't even know how, I used a code from priceless vacations on national's ONLINE, and booked it myself. I also asked about any other changes several times before agreeing to the change in the first place, or I would not of done it. Basically she told me well its changed now, nothing she can do about it, nothing she is going to do about it. And do I want to keep the ressie? This going on 2 hours before we leave the house.

I was so mad, I wrote off a letter, in record time to emerald club. All names listed. And still was ready for our limo! ;)

In the long run, it worked out better for us. And probably hurt national. When we got to the garage it was empty! Nothing anywhere. 1 kinda beat up convertible, I wasn't crazy about anyway. Had to find the guy, and asked what to do, no Ea, no intermediates he said take whatever you want, You want a van?, suv?, Well with just 2 of us, the only suv's they had where huge so we passed and took a brand new white grand prix with 200 miles on it. It was beauitful, and rode great, with a huge trunk. And I saved money. :rotfl: :sunny:

So if your using your credits, do it yourself online. Goes under the coupon spot. Be very leary of the phone people, even if they sound like they know what they are telling you. My 1st agent, on the phone was nice, efficent and seemed to be telling me what she thought was correct, when it was changed ? The 2nd agent just lets say unhelpful (I won't use nasty names or judgments).

Are you talking about the rental credits that are in the dropdown on the reservation screen?

not sure what you mean by the drop down? I'm talking about = when your a member of emerald club, and you rent you build up credit "points" and can use them toward free rentals etc... . After we got back, I got an email saying "your rental has earned you 4 new credits". I had not realized that they where going to have them expire so quickly. :confused3 Apparently they are not going to have you build these up.

When I log onto Emerald Club and make a reservation, there is a drop down box right below the box where you show the contract codes, coupon codes, etc for rental credits. It prefills 0 and drops down for the number of free days you want to apply to the reservation (mine always has just one). I forget how many credits you need for a free day, National's site is down right now. If you are not getting the dropdown, you may not have enough credits for a free day. You cannot apply a coupon plus the free day, usually the $20 coupon is better so I haven't used the credits.

I totally agree with NOT calling to speak directly when making changes or asking questions about reservations. A few months ago I had reserved a car for Oct. and got a really great rate online using codes found on mousesavers - we were happy. But, then I read about a new code on another board. However, I read here on the DIS to be aware of the code as I might need special i.d. to use it when I picked up the car. I decided to call Nat'l and ask an agent if it was a legitimate code. The person on the phone put the code in and then announces, "your rate is - 'x' ". (which was considerably higher than the rate I already had). I immediately told them NO, my rate is "x". Then he said, well, I thought you wanted to use that code so that's what you have now. I tried desperately to argue my point, but I lost the argument....he had already changed it, and said it couldn't be reversed! I was so ticked! I never did get back that original great rate I had for our Oct. trip, but at least I have been able to get it lower than my phone agent. I will ONLY do business with Nat'l online - the phone staff is, well, let's just leave it that I won't be calling to speak to anyone in person.

I found this on National's site, you need 7 rental credits for a free day with regular Emerald Club:

Credits Needed to
Redeem One Rental Day:
Emerald Club 7
Emerald Club Executive 6
Emerald Club Executive Elite 5

The convertible $$$ was over $700.00 and they could not (or would not) re-instate my original ressie. So I went with the last minute EA choice, and got a grand prix for 345 for the entire time. Actually cheaper than the EA price I had before switching to the convertible. :flower:
